Common problems with supplied files from amateur or part-time designers, typically involve file and font incompatibilities, missing bleed and crop/fold/perf marks and poor color matching, (due to improper monitor calibration and a general lack of understanding of the CMYK process) which means the final output can vary DRAMATICALLY from what you see on your monitor. If possible ask the person sending you the disk to format it as a PC disk on their Mac. The Mac OS has this capability built in.
