You will need a 2.5" notebook to IDE adapter or cable to connect the notebook hard drive to the IDE port on your mainboard. Please make sure that pin1 (the red wire on the IDE cable) is connected to pin1 on the notebook drive. Pin1 is always located right next to the jumper pins on the notebook drive.

Most notebook hard drives are secured to the caddy with screws. The screw holes in the caddy align with mounting screw holes on the hard drive. Unfortunately, in 1998, the manufacturers of notebook hard drives changed the screw hole alignment pattern on all of the newer hard drives (typically 2.0GB and larger). Therefore, the newer hard drive mounting holes do not align properly with many of the original manufacturer's caddies.

Our USB drive turns on when we plug it in -- it's obviously USB -- but nothing happens. Right now there's no support for USB storage, including playback of photos, music, or movies, nor saving channels or games to the device. Bummer.

To move one or more files, you'll need to open the windows for your local hard drive and your Connect 2 School "My Documents" folder. Answer: Many notebook manufacturers use a 2 ½" drive enclosure with a proprietary connector. These enclosures require proprietary ICS adapters. If a proprietary adapter is not available for the drive, the standard 2 ½" ICS adapter can be used, provided the drive is removed from the proprietary enclosure. See a list of available adapters. It is best to have your OS on a separate partition than the rest of your data. This results in less fragmentation and ensures speedy operation of your system. You have likely created the image on the FAT32 file system which has a 4Gb file size limitation. Therefore larger files can not be created there. If this is the case, we would suggest that you either use NTFS (through network or attaching the drive to a Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 box if you are running Windows 9x/ME) or split your drive into regions each less than 4Gb, create their images and make virtual volume set afterwards if you need to recover files from there.

That depends entirely upon "how crashed" the drive is. But SpinRite is often credited with performing "true miracles" of data recovery.
