Scarring is defined as fibrosis of the collagen in the dermis (the deep layer of the skin). The color changes seen with acne are usually more superficial and gradually fade with time.

Inflammation caused by acne leads to redness of the skin. Redness usually starts when the acne lesion is active. Even after the acne lesion has improved, however, inflammation may continue deep in the skin, causing persistent redness of the skin. Inflammation also stimulates the production of the pigment molecule called melanin, leading to brown or black discoloration.

First of all in order to prevent scars you must treat Acne properly. If you already have scars then you should ask the dermatologists for an individualized treatment. You can try a chemical peeling, dermal-abrasion or laser abrasion but only id the doctor recommends that procedure to you.

Comedo (whiteheads or blackheads) or papules. The comedo is the basic acne lesion, which is a plugged pore. If the plugged pore stays under the skin, it's called a closed comedo and forms a white bump or whitehead. Blackheads are comedos that open up and appear blackish on the surface of the skin. This black color is not due to dirt, but because the air reacts with the excess oil. Nodules. These are more serious acne lesions. They lodge deeper in the skin, are painful, and can cause scarring.

It depends on the scars. Sometimes dermabrasion by itself is not enough. Preparatory surgery such as scar excision or fillers such as fat injections prior to dermabrasion may be needed to achieve an optimal result.
