Our standard, acoustic round neck guitars are set up at the factory with a regular medium gauge that is: .013, .017, .026, .036, .046, .056. Some people like to increase the first or second string's diameters to .015 and .019. We find this good for playing in standard guitar tuning and/or dropped D and G tunings. If one desires to play in open A or open E tunings, we would suggest that you use, for the wound strings, a lighter gauge: G @ .024, D @ .034, A @ .044 and E @ .052 or .054.

I string the guitars with medium gauge strings unless requested to do otherwise. I suspect that most people actually play with light gauge but I feel the initial set up should be for medium gauge. I build the guitars to handle any reasonable string gauge; however, a light and responsive guitar shouldn't need bridge cables to sound nice .

Are you looking for more distance on your shots or more control over them? Generally, if you string at the lower end of your racquet's recommended tension range, the same stroke will make the ball fly farther. Adjust string tension according to desired effect. Low tension = deeper shots. High tension = shorter shots. any given swing speed, higher string tensions improve control. High tension = better control. Low tension = less control.

Its all about string tension, feel and tuning. For example, 9 gauge strings (9 - 42) are considered normal for electric guitars and they come standard on most brands. These are great for people who play in E Standard tuning (or Drop D) with a light touch and want easy string bending. For my 10 strings, I like the Hannabach 815 10 string set. I also like Luthier Concert 30 strings for flamenco. For picks, I use Jim Dunlop Gator Grip picks, 2.0mm thick. Anything lighter, I break or grind them within the first few songs, being the heavy-handed player that I am.

I use 100% cotton crochet string of many colors, (size 10 for larger ornaments and 20 for the smallest star) which can be purchased from any local craft department. This tool separates the strands of an endless string while your bow is strung so you can install the fur style string silencers described above without unstringing your bow. The rule of thumb is to re-string your racquet as many times a year as you play in a week. Therefore, if you play three times a week, you should re-string your racquet every four months. Re-calibration of gauges depends on your own specified cycles. Most companies run an annual re-calibration. This is so that the gauges are looked at at least once a year. If you use gauges more often and in a harsh environment, consider a more frequent re-calibration date. Conversely, if a gauge is only used once a year, its re-calibration requirement could be moved out to once every 2-3 years. It’s an individual company defined period.
