The full adult size of your GSD will depend in large part on the genetic background of its parents. Adult males should range between 24-26" at the shoulder blade, females from 22-24". Males within the standard may weigh anywhere from 65-90 lbs. depending on their bloodlines. Females may weigh anywhere from 50-75 lbs. Although your pup will reach close to adult height by 10-18 months, he will continue to fill out until up to 3 years old.

Actually, the white shepherd dog predates the GSD breed, which is a relatively new breed of dog. (The GSD as a breed is less than 100 years old.) To understand the beginnings of the White Shepherd, one must discuss its parent breed – the German Shepherd Dog. There was no such thing as a GSD before Captain Max Von Stephanitz and his friend Artur Meyer saw the dog Hektor Linksrhein at the Karlesruhe Exhibition on April 3, 1899.

By the mid-1930s, the Nazis were spreading everywhere and getting into all different areas and interests in Germany. Animal breeders did not escape their influence. Nazi Party members held memberships in the SV and increasingly exerted more and more influence over all aspects of the Club. Eventually, Von Stephanitz was forced out altogether. By the time of his death in 1936, the takeover of the SV by the Nazis was fairly complete.

Most lines of GSD's will live to between 10-13 years of age. 11-12 years is probably a very reasonable expectation. A GSD becomes "middle-aged" between 5-7 years old, and is generally considered "geriatric" at about 10. Their food intake and exercise and nutrition needs may change over this period of time. They may begin to develop stiffness in their joints (much like people do as they get older).

Look, some people don't like German Shepherds for whatever reason - some are afraid of them because of their size, because how they're portrayed in the media, because how much they shed, because they know them as police dogs, etc. etc. Some people just don't like dogs. And there's very little that you can do to change that. You can try to educate them, but some people are not interested in learning new things, and just refuse to like dogs no matter what.

Although some puppies' ears stand as early as 8-10 weeks, don't be concerned if your pup's ears don't stand until 6-7 months (especially pups with large ears) after teething. Some pups ears never stand. This is known as a "soft ear". Sometimes taping is successful. "Soft ears" are a genetic trait, and dogs with soft ears should not be bred even if taping is successful. It is a disqualification in showing. Some GSD's ears stand but wiggle at the tips when the dogs run.

I got heartworm preventatives from you about a year ago. I live in Indianapolis. I have a white German shepherd. He's almost 2yrs old {in November), can he get Heartgard plus in the notes for it, was a sentence about not giving it to certain shepherd breeds. German shepherds are fine- it's the collie breeds and Australian Shepherds we are more worried about. Generally a good German Shepherd puppy will cost between $500 and $1000, depending on his lineage, appearance, and breeding. It’s an adventure every day! They are usually smart dogs whose brains, sense of humor and fun-loving nature sometimes gets them into trouble. White Shepherds are wonderful dogs that can live very well with families, couples or single people. They bond very closely to the members of their family, but may be particularly fond of one special member. White Shepherds love to be near their people, often following them from one room to the next.

Your White Shepherd should do well on most types of quality food. You should try to stay away from the cheap, grocery store brands and definitely stay away from any type of generic feed product. Some White Shepherds have the tendency toward food-related allergies, especially to wheat, corn or soybean meals. Try to use a quality meat-based product with meat or meat meal as the first listed ingredient on the label.

Regular veterinary care, yearly vaccinations and proper feeding are vital in maintaining your dog's health. With proper nutrition, routine veterinary care, and regular exercise and grooming your German Shepherd should live to 10 to 13 years.

Basic obedience training is an essential part of responsible dog ownership. It will make your dog a better companion and will help establish a stronger bond between the two of you. A German Shepherd Dog is a natural guard dog and does not need training for this.
