Subject: 3.2 Where did the term 'gothic' come from?

news.answers/alt-gothic-faq
Probably the earliest usage, as applied to music though was by Anthony H. Wilson (Joy Division manager) who was overcome by a rare moment of lucidity on a 1978 BBC TV program when he described Joy Division as Gothic compared with the pop mainstream. How 'Goth' and 'Gothic' came to be used to describe the movement though is a little less clear. What is certain is that NME and Sounds used it, and there seem to be two suggestions as to where they got it from.

Lou Montulli, currently the protocols manager in Netscape's client product division, wrote the cookies specification for Navigator 1.0, the first browser to use the technology. The term fits the usage precisely; it's just not a well-known term outside of computer science circles.'"

Thanks to John Mc Donagh aka Nascent Virion for a list of what bands he though typified the Gothic sound. Some may disagree, but this is a rather decent representaion of GENERAL catagories. Clan of Xymox (Synth, almost dancey) * Southern Death Cult (SDC) later split in all directions. Only SDC are condsidered properly Gothic. However many of Southern Death Cult's Goth followers remained true even when they entered their 'The Cult' glam metal phase.

Subject: (3.2) Are amber or olive green jars worth more and why?

Frequently Asked Questions -- Fruit Jars
Yes, jars in amber, cornflower blue, olive green, etc. are worth more because fewer of them were made and they are in great demand by collectors. The amber jars were made that way as an attempt to keep fruit from turning brown. The amber glass kept out the harmful effect of light rays on the contents of the jar. However, the jars were less popular with homemakers because the contents were more difficult to see.

Some departments have "Kelly Days". What is that and where did the term come from?

CaptainMica.com -Fire Service Trivia and FAQs
Labor laws establish how many hours a worker can work, in a given period, before the employer is required to pay overtime. For firefighters this amount is set at 53 hours a week. This does not mean that a firefighter gets overtime pay the instant he or she works over 53 hours in a week. For a 24/48 schedule this would amount to 19 hours of OT every third week because on two weeks the firefighter would work 48 hours but on the third it would be 72.

Subject: (3.2) How do I configure swap space?

HighWind Software's Product Frequently Asked Questions
Spreading swap across multiple disks (assuming they are the same speed) will help increase performance. Solaris allows the use of swap files which can be placed on striped partitions for increased performance. Generally, configuring the machine with twice as much swap as there is physical memory works well. (If there is 256MB RAM on the machine, configure 512MB swap on the machine). For systems with 1GB or more of memory, using 1x to 1.5x physical memory for swap space, works well.
