Frequently Asked Questions

Do you use film or digital cameras?

Peter Holcombe Photography | Information | FAQ |
We switched from film to digital equipment over four years ago when we found that we could produce equal or superior photographs with current digital technology. As a result of that transition we have found that we have opened a creative door that allows us the freedom to create images we only dreamed of years ago. Now our motto is if you can imagine it, we can create it. We wouldn't even consider going back to film!

FAQ's
Most of my work is by digital capture now because I can give you an "unlimited" number of images from which to choose, easily convert them to B&W, add designer borders, and fix imperfections such as skin blemishes in your selections. Most labs are scanning negatives now and printing them digitally so you are actually receiving digital images even though the image was originally film generated. Film coverage is by request.

Digital cameras have made an incredible progress lately and I gladly use them these days for editorial assignments. For my style of wedding photography, however, I don't find the technology to be quite there yet, for the following reasons: I need a camera that will allow me to shoot unobtrusively, often in low-light situations, without flash and without making a lot of noise.

Which cameras are better - film or digital?

Robert Aldsworth's Photo World
NEITHER is necessarily BETTER. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages. However, the choice is increasingly weighing in favour of digital cameras, as there is far greater selection of them available and the prices on them have dropped considerably, reducing the economic advantages once enjoyed by selecting a film camera. Furhtermore, with digital, you save money because you don't have to keep buying film.

Are the quality of digital cameras as good as film?

FAQ for Houston Event Photography
I feel that the quality is as good are even better than film cameras depending on the situation or event you are using them for. In some situations film still has it's advantages but digital is catching up and I feel soon that film will be falling behind compared to most professional digital cameras. I have personally made 40" X 60" prints using my cameras that I can say were far better than what I would have expected if I had been using film.

Both, or either, depending on what the situation requires. For film work, we use the Canon EOS system for 35mm film (Rollei for 2.5" film). We do our own black and white printing. For digital, we also use Canon equipment. We nearly always use digital instead of Polaroids to check our setups.

What equipment do you use, film or digital?

Donovan Photographer :. FAQ .: California Wedding Photograph...
I shoot digital. I use two professional 8 mega-pixel digital cameras that actually give a higher quality than 35mm film. You can enlarge images to 11 X 14 or 16 X 20 which I wouldn't recommend with 35mm film. I have/use two of everything (cameras, lenses, flashes) to provide redundancy and backup on your wedding day. Also, three backups of the wedding images are made (one is kept offsite) right after the wedding.

Stock up on some rolls, but there really isn't anywhere that you can't get film. Maybe Burma. We had some trouble getting camera batteries, but finally tracked it down. Bring some extras of those. You can get your film developed almost anywhere. Some do a fine job, others really screw it up. We would develop the film & send the pics home seperate from the negatives in case one got lost.

Do you use digital cameras to create your images?

Questions and Answers - Byron-Hurt Studios
Digital cameras are great for a number of applications. While the image quality afforded by digital cameras is on the rise, the vast majority still can not meet the large resolution requirements called for by film recorders and professional offset color printing presses. We have found that use of traditional medium to large format cameras and quality digital scanning is still the best approach for achieving professional results.
