By default the file is recognized as UNIX or MAC and the status bar should show this. When the file is loaded it will be converted to DOS (CR/LF) and in HEX mode you will see this as 0D 0A. When the file is saved it will be converted back to UNIX (LF only) if the "Save file as input format" setting is set in Advanced -> Configuration.

Copy your DOS templates to the directory declared by Tools -> Options -> Template DOS Files. Erase any corrupted .tem files (1K in size) found in the Template Files directory. Insure that your DOS template files are not read-only. Then run File -> DOS Conversion Utility as described in the User's Manual.

You can access this setting by going to Advanced -> Configuration -> File Handling -> DOS/UNIX/MAC Handling. Select "UNIX" as the "Default file type for new files". There is a DOS/UNIX/MAC Handling topic under the File Handling branch under Configuration in the Advanced menu to allow specification of the default format for new files created in UltraEdit.

MicroEmacs facilitates the editing of the standard file types on all platforms. All files retain their line ending type through edits. i.e. if a DOS file is edited on a UNIX system, the file is still written as a DOS file. When new files are created, they are created with the standard attributes of the host O/S. Note that the only ending that is NOT preserved are files whose lines end in <CR>'s only. The line format is correctly interpreted on reading, but is not retained on the write.

When a file is loaded UltraEdit checks the first 7K of the file and if it contains more than two NULL (Hex 00) the file is considered a binary/HEX file. NULLS are not valid in an ASCII file and will be converted to spaces if you edit the file in text mode. If you view a HEX file in text mode but make no changes UltraEdit should not convert the NULLS to spaces, but if you do make changes in TEXT mode to a HEX file the change will occur.

Version 1 of MS-DOS didn't have subdirectories or paths, and wasn't much like Unix at all. The '/' character was used to denote command options (like '-' in Unix); this was rather common in CP/M, and is the standard in many DEC operating systems. In version 2.0 of MS-DOS, many new Unix-like features were added, including subdirectories. Since '/' was used for command options by many programs, that character couldn't be used in paths.

You can use Peter Watson's MUG! program on your IIgs to transfer files via MS-DOS Iomega Zip disks. MUG! will let you read Zip disks on a IIgs equipped with a Zip drive and a SCSI interface. A : If you want a cross-compiler for m68k on a DOS machine, you need is DJGPP configured as host=i386-go32, and target=m68k-coff. This has been done already. The binaries there are based on GCC 2.6.0. This package is reportedly no longer supported, but if you have questions about it, you can send them to Jim Karpinski. For building GCC as a Unix-to-DOS cross-compiler, here are the instructions on how to do it.

Before CDex 1.10 you can only encode WAV files, but not the other way around. There are several tools available which can do this job. Take a look at www.mp3.com and look for utilities like WinAmp or MaPlay.

GMT has been installed on a variety of UNIX systems, including (but not limited to) computers from Cray, Sun, IBM, DEC, HP, SGI, Data General, Apple (Mac OS X), and Next, all running some flavor of UNIX. GMT has also been installed under Linux and MkLinux, which are open source UNIX-like operating systems for PC and Mac OS 9, respectively. GMT also installs under Windows and OS/2. GMT is very portable and should compile on almost any computer.

Typically, your authentication method will be with a username and password. Note that your Unix account and password are created separately from your NetID account name and password.

DOS is a Disk Operating System, that means it's an OS that uses a disk. Operating systems for IBM PCs since the early 1980s were called DOS. DOS consists of the command prompt, mostly command.com and two kernelfiles. That's a basic DOS system. DOS was a mainstream OS until Windows 95 (which also uses DOS, btw) threw it off the market.

The most compelling reason for a standalone shell is when the primary drive has gone down and must be recovered. While working from a standalone /unix is slow and tedious, it can often save an entire hard disk with minimal data loss. We have also used this standalone shell to repair a corrupt /etc/inittab, to fix /etc/passwd, to restore a /bin/login that had been removed, and to install new bootstraps on the hard drive.

If you only want a few files converted, then the simplest way is to drag and drop those files onto the program. You can either drag files onto the program's icon on the desktop, or onto the program itself. If you drag files onto the program's icon there is a limit with this approach of around 10 files. This limit arises because the filenames are concatenated to make a command string, and this seems to have a Windows-impose limit of 255 characters. This problem may be solved in later versions.

The largest number of files converted at one time using the wildcard function was reported to be around 2000. A week later someone contacted me with around 3000 files to be converted. A few weeks after that someone was claiming 7000. If you'd like to claim a higher number, let me know. Theoretically the only limit is your disk space.

A long time ago, samba 2.x was installed on the unix side. It allowed one to easily map unix files as a PC drive (usually s: for stokes, the machine it ran on). It worked really well, I didn't have to be involved in any way, it was fast enough, it was easy and everyone was happy. stokes, however, was starting to show its age. We then bought a couple of big honkin' dual-processor linux boxes. The idea was that samba would be moved to one of the boxes.

Probably the biggest factor in how you decide to answer the question is who is asking the question. You may decide that well-meaning friends and family get a different answers than strangers. Perhaps you feel like your family members aren't being so well-meaning, but rather insistent. The PalmPilot series is made for a completely different purpose than the 200LX. The 200LX is essentially a full-blown computer that fits in your pocket, and doubles as an organizer. The PalmPilot series are meant to be organizers and to help connect with desktop computers. Both platforms have their strengths and weaknesses, but for real computing in the palm of your hand, the 200LX is the only choice.

The ruler works as a normal ruler would, showing "0" as the start point, allowing the user to measure the number of columns prior to a given point. The status bar, on the other hand, is intended to show the column in which you're about to make an entry. As with normal Windows applications, both of these modes of indication and measurement are, I believe, the standard way of doing things, however, most applications do not include both.

Since Windows file size limitation is 3G per file, you can only create an audio file which is smaller than 3G. If the text file is very big, you can convert it by reducing the audio quality.
