Babies born earlier than 26 weeks' gestation have a much higher rate of complications, according to the March of Dimes, and Best Doctors says that only babies born after 24 weeks of gestation have a chance of survival. However, Best Doctors reports, the chances of survival at 24 weeks are 60%, and the chances of having a handicap due to the early birth are 60%, as well.

Because all the doctors in the Family Practice Maternity Service appreciate the importance of our families and having a balanced life, we've grouped together to share the responsibility of being "on-call" for when women go into labour or need medical attention. The doctors rotate this responsibility among them, so that they're not on-call 24/7, and therefore can "have a life" outside of medicine.

Most jaundice requires no treatment. When treatment is necessary, placing your baby under special lights while he or she is undressed will lower the bilirubin level. Depending on your baby's bilirubin level, this can be done in the hospital or at home. Jaundice is treated at levels that are much lower than those at which brain damage is a concern. Treatment can prevent the harmful effects of jaundice. Putting your baby in sunlight is not recommended as a safe way of treating jaundice.

Research shows that your child will receive better care if one doctor provides most of your care. The bleeding that flows from your uterus after the delivery of the placenta is called lochia. The first few days after birth, lochia is heavy. The amount of this flow can change with activity and position. The flow will generally be heavier when sitting, standing or breastfeeding. It often has a fleshy odor. Within about ten days the flow should diminish and become pale pink. During the next several weeks it becomes yellowish white, brown or white. It can continue up to six to eight weeks.

Patients can choose either a physician or a midwife for their delivery; we do ask that you meet all of the practitioners in whichever group you want to deliver your baby. A midwife and a physician are on call each night and we do not cross-cover with other practices, so you can be assured that only a member of our practice will deliver your baby.

We are a group practice; therefore any member of the service might be with you for your birth. We practice this way for several reasons. First, it is very exhausting being on-call 24/7. We do not believe it is safe to deliver babies when you are over-extended in this way. Secondly, many of us have other responsibilities that prevent us from providing this type of care. In the event your child has a sickness or injury that requires hospitalization, the pediatricians in our group are experts in the care of sick children. We routinely prefer to hospitalize at LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center, but we also see patients at Methodist University Hospital and Baptist East Hospital. The staff physicians in our group will oversee the child's care and arrange for any sub specialty visits that may be necessary.
