In the past many timber frame houses did not have insulation put into the internal panels which gave people the impression that this form of construction was noisy. Taylor Lane supply semi-rigid batt insulation to all panels for the client to fit between the studs. Tests have shown that a 90mm internal panel has the same sound reduction qualities as a single block internal wall.

First and foremost, you need to find a plot of land! Allow plenty of time for this, as there is a lot to think about. Find out as much as you can about the plot in advance. Find out whether it is serviced, whether you will be able to get planning permission, what condition the ground is in for drainage, load bearing capacity etc. Check whether there is clear access to the site, whether there are overhead power lines or underground existing main services crossing the site.

For heavy items such as kitchen cupboards and bathroom fittings rows of timber noggins can be fixed into the timber frame panels at the required height before plaster boarding. It is widely known that the quality and strength of the fixing into timber is far stronger than if you were fixing into a modern day thermal block in traditional construction. Alternatively, certain internal walls that are required to take a lot of fittings could be lined with 18mm plywood or similar.

Either can be done well. With block we generally recommend an insulation level of R-5 or more. Usually it is installed adjacent to the block and then a 3/4 inch air space is furred out on the inside. Make sure that the top of this airspace is blocked off from the attic. With frame walls the concern is good insulation installation and reducing air infiltration. Seal gaps, make sure insulation is cut correctly (too long and it tends to bend, too short and it misses spots).

a natural building material, timbers characteristically have slight variations in grain and color. Occasionally a slight grain separation, known as a "check", will appear on the surface of a timber. Checking does not compromise the strength of a timber; it's a naturally occurring feature that can occur when timbers contain heartwood (wood cut from the center of the tree). Checking can also occur if timber is allowed to dry too quickly.

This obviously depends on the size of the frame, the resources you have available to you and to a certain extent, the weather conditions. Timber Frame houses comply fully with the same fire standards as all new houses built. The structural frame used behind suitable wall linings has no bearing on the actions of a fire. All Modern timber Homes thermal insulation are based around fibreglass or rock wool which do no smoulder or generate toxic fumes when heated. Their fire safety complies fully with the current building regulations.
