A student's eligibility is based on financial need. One of the components necessary to determine financial need is the "expected family contribution" or EFC. The EFC is determined using a congressionally-approved formula applied to the results of the student's need analysis form. The formula takes into account many variables, most of which do not remain constant year to year.

FWS award of $1638 means that this is the maximum a student can earn as part of their FWS position during the year. Depending upon eligibility and agreement from the supervisor of the FWS employee, it is possible to increase this award amount by contacting the Student Employment Office. There are some circumstances in which a Work-Study student employee must discontinue work before the maximum award has been achieved. Each work term gives you a four-month interview - Many employers hire former Co-op students, which means lower recruitment and training costs and higher employee retention. You'll have access to a year-round supply of enthusiastic, motivated student employees available for work terms beginning in January, May, and September. Co-op students let you undertake projects not funded in your base budget and also serve as highly skilled relief workers during peak periods.

There is usually no deadline as such for FWS Job requests. However, the applicant pool is reduced considerably throughout the summer and as the year progresses. Therefore, it is to the advantage of the agency or department to have their Job Requests in as early as possible, preferably by the "advised date" on the spring memorandum requesting FWS job listings.

Students may work from the first day of the Fall semester to the last day of the Spring semester. An FWS student can work over Labor Day, Fall Break, Thanksgiving Break, and Spring Break. Students can also work during dead week and finals week. In some cases, a FWS student can work between the fall and spring semester.

Your award notice lists any scholarships, grants, loans, or Work-Study that you are eligible to receive. The Student Financial Operations Office sends you an email when you have a student bill (sometimes called an account statement) available to view and print on Wolverine Access.

Work-Study awards are earned by working for eligible employers and collecting paychecks up to the amount of the award. To locate a Work-Study job, go to www.studentemployment.umich.edu. Contact employers directly for interviews. Once you have a Work-Study job, it may take up to a month to receive your Work-Study funds (in the form of a paycheck). No. You do not have to accept a loan if you do not want one. If you do not attend a loan counseling workshop, or complete a loan application, we will automatically assume that you are not interested in the loan and it will be deleted. If you change your mind and decide you want a loan later, contact your Financial Aid Advisor to find out if the student loan may be added back onto your award letter.
