If you attend an intensive course you will complete one level in two months. Students who complete certain levels successfully can skip half a level or a level after having consulted their German teacher.

To take the Live German Course your computer needs to be equipped with Flash, audio hardware (sound card), and a headset or speakers/headphones and a microphone. The Flash player is a free software that lets you view interactive content created with Macromedia-Adobe Flash. You probably already have Flash on your computer because it is pre-installed in most operating systems and web browsers. If you have an older version of the player, you may need to upgrade it from time to time.

If you've taken two or more years of German in high school, you need to need to take a placement test before you can enroll in any German classes. Visiting students are restricted to undergraduate courses. Upper-level undergraduate courses (300- or 400-level) require the instructor’s permission before registration.

You can study German offline using the book provided with the course and the printable version of vocabulary, grammar, and exercises. If you want, you can be connected to the Internet for the time necessary to log into the German course and load the section that you wish to study. You can use the Preload button to load sound and data files to your computer's cache. You will be alerted on the screen when the loading is finished. At that point, you can disconnect and study offline.

No. All classes are taught in English. German language classes, however, are a mandatory part of all of our programs for international students who are not fluent in German. You will have six hours of German per week during the first year of your program. Undergraduate students will have another 2 hours per week during the second year. Please note that a mandatory part of all programs is a trimester internship in Germany.

We look at the level of German, not the actual number of courses. The equivalent of two years of college level German with a "B" average is required. This can be met by completing a two year sequence (e.g. German 101-202), or by taking advanced coursework that already indicates you are beyond the two year level (e.g. a 3rd year composition course and/or literature course taught in German). My school has a program in Germany, but not in Munich.

All students who enter our ESL program take a placement test in order to assess which level is best for them. The test consists of multiple-choice grammar questions, a writing task, and a short interview. There is no charge to take the test.

First-time Cy-Fair students are required to take a placement test in order to enter the ESOL classes. Learners who have taken ESOL courses at Cy-Fair, Lone Star College–Fairbanks Center, or other colleges in the Lone Star College System may waive the placement test if the last course taken is within the last twelve months from the time of registration. Most of the teaching at German universities is done in German. However, if you do not know any German yet, you might want to take a close look at the newly established undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate degree programmes in English and in German mentioned in Q 1.

This depends upon the program you choose. If you want to apply to an NYU exchange program in Berlin or Vienna, you must have successfully completed Intermediate German II or the equivalent by the time you begin the exchange. We recommend that you also, if possible, take at least one post-intermediate course, such as Conversation & Composition or Germany: 1989 & Beyond, to prepare yourself adequately for these exchange programs.

Many students do have A level (or equivalent level courses in) Geography or Environmental Science but we have many successful students who have not come with this background. Year 1 is about ensuring all students have a very solid foundation of geographical understanding and experience and also learning the very different approach required for degree level work. An enthusiastic approach is very important, and a strong commitment to the course.
