It is important to realize that new TR Scholars are automatically enrolled in the courses they are required to take in a given semester. As a result, they are expected to fill out their schedule with other courses that do not conflict with the honors courses. The Course of Study for first year students is designed to help prepare them for success in college and to establish intellectual community amongst TR Scholars. This necessitates taking classes together.

Take lots of math and do well on the math section of the GRE exam, by preparing for it and re-taking it if necessary. Get strong letters of recommendation; in order to do so, you might consider working on a research project with a member of the Economics Department (Econ 498) or selecting some of the more advanced Econ courses, with small enrollments. The first thing to do is fill out an Application. Upon fulfilling the requirements and successfully completing an application for admission, Ohlone College is required to conduct an admission by lottery process. Chart your basal body temperature (BBT). You need to buy a basal thermometer. A glass one costs about $5, but you have to wait 5 minutes before you get out of bed. For that reason, it is probably better to invest $10 and a B-D digital basal thermometer. These thermometers are more accurate than ones for fever, and accuracy counts for a lot! Once you have one, you should start taking your temp each morning at the same time, before you do any activity (speak, move around, get up, etc.).

It is impossible for us to tell you in advance “what your chances are”. It depends on the number of currently enrolled children who continue into the next semester, therefore dictating how many openings we have for new children. For popular schools there has nearly always been room for children in priorities 1-5. If your child is in one of these categories you should have a strong chance. The last child to receive a place is usually identified by a distance measurement under Priority 8.

The best way to approach this is to meet with a few professors in your department and ask them for the names of possible supervisors in your particular area of interest. The supervisor you choose is at least as important as the institution where you choose to study. Once you've compiled a list of possible supervisors, make contact with them (by mail, phone, or e-mail) and indicate your interest. If possible, visit them at the universities where they teach.
