Cryobanks is currently involved in supporting research pursuing cures for ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), spinal cord repair and dermal wound repair. We support this research by supplying cord blood not suitable for transplant, in addition to financial funding for these projects. Cryobanks' corporate policy does not permit involvement in any research that is deemed controversial (cloning, embryonics) or cosmetic. Our goal is to advance the field in areas that would save lives.

There are really only a small number of research institutions looking specifically at environmental links to breast cancer. While some funding from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences is looking at causes of breast cancer, they are generally focused on lifestyle issues - weight, smoking, diet, exercise, etc. MBCC believes this is very limited considering the evidence for environmental links to breast cancer.

Our research group at UCSF tries to discover the causes of cancers (lung, brain, breast cancers and leukemia) in children and adults. We also study the question why some patients with cancer live longer and healthier lives than others. The long range goal of our research is better prevention and treatments of cancer. To conduct these studies we interview people with the cancer and compare them to people without the cancer, to determine the differences.

A main focus of our group at the present time is to explore how knowledge of telomerase and telomere biology will have useful applications in cancer diagnostics and therapeutics as well as determining how introduction of telomerase into normal human cells may have utility in cell and tissue engineering. To advance our knowledge about organismal aging, we need to have a much larger group of scientists working in the basic biology of aging field.
