Blood clots can form in veins when you are inactive. For example, clots can form if you are paralyzed or bedridden or must sit while on a long flight or car trip. Surgery or an injury can damage your blood vessels and cause a clot to form. Cancer can also cause deep vein thrombosis. Some people have blood that clots too easily, a problem that may run in families.

Theoretically anyone can get a DVT after any surgical procedure. However, the risk of DVT after EVLT is very low (less than 1 in 400).

Generally, DVT is caused by a combination of sluggish blood flow through vessels and the tendency of blood to clot resulting from a variety of conditions. Some of the conditions which result in poor circulation include heart attack, varicose veins, inactivity and prolonged bedrest. Blood clots can then form and are generally found within a deep vein in the thigh or calf.

A: This refers to the formation of a thrombus (blood clot) within a Deep vein, commonly in the thigh or pelvis. This can result in two serious consequences. If the thrombus partially or completely blocks the flow of blood through the vein, blood begins to pool and build up below the site, which can lead to chronic swelling and pain. The second consequence which can result is if the thrombus breaks free and travels through the veins, it can reach the lungs where it is called a pulmonary embolism.

Veins carry used blood to the heart through one-way valve systems. When there is a weakness in the vein wall or a faulty valve, the valve stretches and no longer closes properly. The veins become filled with blood that can’t flow normally, causing pain, swelling, discoloration, sores that won’t heal, blood clots and other problems.

Blood clots are most often caused, but not always, by long periods of immobility. During this time, a condition known as deep-vein thrombosis can occur. Deep-vein thrombosis occurs when blood clots block major veins in the arms, legs, and torso. If these blood clots break off and move into the blood steam, they can travel to vital organs causing sudden death.

Bruising is caused by bleeding under the skin. Blood clots may form within the bruises if there is excessive bleeding and the body is trying to stop it. Adhesions can form as a result of tissue injury during surgery, as a result of abdominal and pelvic therapies such as radiation, or as the result of other diseases, such as endometriosis. When tissue in the abdomen or pelvis is damaged during surgery, your body’s response is inflammation. This response brings fibrin to the site of trauma to cover the injured tissue quickly. Fibrin adheres to the site of injury and often to surrounding tissue and/or organs, forming an adhesion.

There are many possibilities. The most common factor is a family history of vein problems. Other common causes are pregnancy, hormonal changes (pregnancy or menopause), obesity and history of trauma. Interestingly, many very athletic men and women can develop vein disease. Standing for long periods of time can make problems worse probably because of the added stress placed on vein valves.

Your doctor will obtain a medical history and examine you to determine if you have deep vein thrombosis. Duplex ultrasound is the most common test used to diagnose deep vein clots. It uses sound waves to evaluate the flow of blood in your veins. A gel is put on the skin of the leg. A handheld device is placed on the leg and passed back and forth over the affected area. This device sends sound waves from the leg to an ultrasound machine. A computer then turns the sounds into a picture.

Preventing deep vein thrombosis depends on whether you have had a clot before or if you are at risk for developing a deep vein clot but never had one. If you have never had a deep vein clot, but are in a situation that may increase your risk, be sure to: Get out of bed and move around as soon as you are able after having surgery or being ill. The sooner you move around the less chance you have to develop a clot.

Anticoagulants (sometimes called blood thinners) decrease your blood's ability to clot. They are used to stop clots from getting bigger and to prevent a blood clot from forming. Anticoagulants do not break up blood clots that have already formed. Your body's natural system will dissolve the clot. Anticoagulants can either come as a pill (warfarin) or as an injection or shot (heparin). Heparin and warfarin may be given at the same time.

There are things you can do to prevent deep vein thrombosis. Many doctors recommend that you wear compression stockings during a journey longer than 8 hours. On long flights, walk up and down the aisle hourly, flex and point your feet every 20 minutes while sitting, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol and beverages with caffeine.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot develops in a vein deep in the body. Deep veins are found within groups of muscles. The veins close to the skin are called superficial veins. While DVT most often develops in the lower legs or thighs, they may appear in the upper body, such as the arms or other locations in the body. It is estimated that there are more than 2.5 million persons in the US who develop deep vein thrombosis each year.

Because a DVT originates on the operating table, therapy begins before a patient goes to the operating room. Generally, patients are treated with sequential leg compression stockings and given a blood thinner prior to surgery. Both of these therapies continue throughout your hospitalization. The third major preventive measure involves getting the patient moving and out of bed as soon as possible after the operation to restore normal blood flow in the legs.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition where blood clots develop in the deep veins of the legs. In the event that a blood clot breaks off from the DVT, it can travel to the lungs causing significant illness and, on rare occasions, death. Prolonged immobility is generally thought to be the common underlying risk factor, and thus any travel involving prolonged immobility can result in deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

There is no risk of this taking place as the obliteration of the vein can only take Place if the sclerosant is in high concentration. This only takes place in the stagnant circulation of the diseased vein. Once the drug enters then normal deep venous circulation it is diluted and carried away in the flow and causes no harmful effects.

In most cases, an underlying causes is not found, and we never know why it happens. However, retinal vein occlusion is more common in patients with high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis.

Not necessarily, but careful evaluation with pre-operative ultrasound is most important. Before any procedures are done in this clinical setting, deep venous insufficiency and deep venous clots must be ruled out.

Your risk for deep vein clots increases if you have several risk factors at the same time. For example, a woman with an inherited condition for clotting who also takes birth control pills has an even higher risk to have a blood clot.

The current thinking is that mild exercise during long flights may prevent the condition. In addition, experts recommend that air travelers avoid alcoholic beverages immediately before and during flight.
