The original PowerBook G3 can support up-to 160 MB of RAM with a combination of 32 MB of onboard RAM and a 128 MB 60 ns EDO DIMM. Greater RAM capacity may be possible with higher-density DIMMs. The "Wallstreet", "PDQ", and "Bronze" PowerBook G3 series can support up-to 384 MB of RAM by using one 128 MB and 256 MB 10 ns SO-DIMM. Both SO-DIMMs used in these PowerBook G3s must use SDRAM, not EDO or SGRAM (with a "G").

The original PowerBook G3 does not support DVD, but some models in the "Wallstreet", "PDQ", and "Bronze" series do. All models in the PowerBook G3 "FW" series support DVD. Certain "Wallstreet" and "PDQ" PowerBook G3s come equipped with an optional DVD-ROM drive and are powered by a DVD video PC card. The eMac "700" shipped with 128 MB of SDRAM pre-installed and can support up to 1.0 GB of RAM by removing the pre-installed module and installing two 512 MB 168-pin, 64-bit-wide 8ns PC100 SDRAM DIMMs. The eMac "800" shipped with either 128 MB of 256 MB of SDRAM pre-installed and can support up to 1.0 GB by removing the pre-installed module and installing two 512 MB 168-pin PC133 SDRAM DIMMs. The eMac "1.0" shipped with either 128 MB or 256 MB of SDRAM pre-installed, and can support up to 1.

The processor, in all models of the PowerBook G3 series, is soldered to a daughtercard, and is, therefore, not easily upgradable. Because the ROM is also soldered to the daughtercard, the feasible way to upgrade the PowerBook G3's processor would be to replace the existing daughtercard with a new one with a faster processor and another ROM. Apple has officially stated that they have no plans to offer any type of processor upgrade cards at this time, although third-party cards are available.

Unlike the iMac, all models in the PowerBook G3 series are nicely equipped with removable storage, so file transfer is generally straightforward. However, if your older Mac only has a 1.44 MB floppy and your PowerBook G3 only has a Zip drive, then you may wish to look into other means of file transfer. If both Macs have modems, an easy way to transfer files is to stuff and binhex the files you wish to transfer using Aladdin Systems' StuffIt.

That is a hardware problem related to synchronization between the computer and a Texas Instruments chip used in many FireWire cameras. Unfortunately, it's beyond our control. Yes, it will. However, initiating (hosting) a multi-party video chat requires a lot of CPU power and conferences intiated from machines below 800 Mhz may not work properly. The participant with the fastest CPU should be the one to initiate the conference, and can then invite people with slower machines. Also note that G3 machines below 600 Mhz are not recognized by iChat as supporting video conferencing at all. You can get around this limitation by installing iChatUSBCam.

The very short answer is: you can't do this easily. There are problems between the USB-to-serial stuff; problems with printer drivers; and problems with OS X (or OS 9, etc) not knowing about either. The G3's, G4's and iMacs do not have the old Apple "DIN-8" connector (serial Localtalk) for modems and printers. These later Macs either use USB or Ethernet. Regarding the DIN-8 and Appletalk, see a related FAQ question for a description of that port. I don't describe Ethernet or USB.
