You can come and view our accommodation on pre-arranged University Open Days. These are usually held during the summer. There are also Campus Tours throughout the year that can take you around the main Highfield Campus and to a Hall of Residence. Some Schools in the University also arrange for you to visit a Hall Complex during their Visit Day. Please contact your particular School for more details.

This is quite difficult as other students are living in the halls and we have to respect their privacy. However, the University arranges both general and Faculty open days where we arrange tours around some accommodation so you can get a taste of what living in halls of residence is like.

The Accommodation Service has lists of private rented accommodation advertised under the SASSH accreditation scheme, run jointly by the University of Southampton, Southampton Solent University and Southampton City Council. We first publish the lists in February of each year to coincide with our Housing Awareness Week and then continue to update them throughout the year. The list is available online and also in hard copy from the Student Services Centre.

The Accommodation Service runs two schemes to help students in search of people to share accommodation with. We have a House Mates scheme which carries adverts placed by students searching for an extra housemate to fill a house for which they already hold a contract. We also run a Flat Mates scheme for students wishing to form groups when looking for houses. Students can subscribe to both these services from the Accommodation Service website.

The University of Southampton runs an accreditation scheme in conjunction with Southampton Solent University and Southampton City Council. All properties that the University advertises on its private rented lists have to join the accreditation scheme. Accredited properties will comply with the standards of the SASSH scheme. A copy of the SASSH standards can be viewed on the Accommodation Office website under the private rented section.

Moving from University accommodation to private accommodation and obtaining early release from your contract is only possible if there is someone acceptable to the University, with no existing University accommodation contract, who is willing to take your place. Your contract with the University is for the entire period specified. Most University Registered landlords require a similar contract.

If you are homeless or your current home is unsuitable for your needs then we could help you move to accommodation in the private rented sector. We can help with a rent deposit and rent in advance to eligible households. To be eligible you will need to be homeless or threatened with homelessness and in priority need. You may also be eligible if you are a Council tenant and you wish to move to the private rented sector and you need help with a deposit.
