Make the site unattractive to Mother Squirrel by using several of these tips: Leave lights on; Place a portable radio nearby set to a rock station, turning the volume on high; Knot up some rags or old socks, sprinkle them generously with ammonia and place them around the area. Without damaging the nest, gently move it 3-5" with a broom, so the mother knows it's been disturbed. Squirrels usually have an alternative nest site to which they can move their babies.

In spring and summer, mother raccoons may use chimneys and attics as nesting sites for raising their cubs. The best and kindest solution is to wait a few weeks for the raccoons to move out on their own. Once the raccoons are gone, promptly call a chimney sweep to install a mesh chimney cap (or seal any holes leading to the attic) and this situation will never occur again.

In North Carolina, chances are excellent that the snake involved is a rat snake. (Rat snake shed pictured at right) This species is an excellent climber and is responsible for most of the “snake-in-house” calls the Museum of Natural Sciences receives. If you need to verify the identification, collect as much of the shed as possible, put it in a protective container and send it to a science center or natural history museum for identification.

It normally takes 16 days from the time the next to the last egg is laid till they hatch. That's when the female starts sitting on the eggs full time. Then, approx 28 days after the eggs hatch, the young should take flight or 'fledge'. That can fluctuate a day or two depending on conditions in and around the site. This is another reason that nest checks should be done on martins. You can keep accurate tabs on your colony and it's well being.

Most building codes do not allow for your clother dryer vent to terminate any where other that the exterior of the structure. Vent termination in an attic or garage is not acceptable and should be corrected as soon as possible.

Chances are good that it's empty and you can just leave it alone. The squirrel that was using it will relocate or build a new one. If there are babies involved and they seem uninjured, leave them where they are, keep people and pets away and wait. The mother squirrel will retrieve and relocate them. Be patient; if she has to build a new nest, it may take her several hours. Nothing, please! Baby squirrels can aspirate very easily and develop pneumonia, lessening their chances of survival.

Some hamster moms like to change nest locations more frequently than others. I think they may be looking for the safest, warmest place for their little ones. Also, it's possible that the nest has become soiled, and the mother would like to move to a cleaner area. Sometimes a hamster mom does strange things, that almost seem careless, but overall if she is nursing her babies and keeping them warm and safe, then she is within the norm of hamster parenting.
