Several companies are offering point-and-shoot digital cameras with ring flashes and calling them digital dental cameras. These cameras do not function well because the camera has no way of controlling the amount of light the flash puts out. Every time you take a photograph, the amount of light necessary for a proper exposure is slightly different.

A Point-and-Shoot digital camera is an all-in-one camera: the lens and flash are built in. An SLR digital camera looks and functions just like a 35mm camera body. You may interchange lenses and flashes with compatible accessories.

Codecs allow Windows and many applications to view your RAW files. They are provided and maintained by the camera manufacturers. The main issue is the camera's flash. The flash location is fixed on all point-and-shoot digital cameras. It is impossible for a flash that is located in a single position to properly illuminate all of the types of photographs that are taken in a dental office. One way to visualize this fact is to think of a 35mm dental camera that uses a point flash.

Some cameras are designed for this, so you should check your manual. Many manufacturers offer proprietary lithium ion battery systems with their cameras. These are very sophisticated batteries with very long life. Although the small size of the individual pixels in CCD, CMOS, and Live-MOS image sensors enables them to capture even more detail than film, the sensitivity of the sensor elements is highly directional. That is, they respond best to light that strikes the elements straight on. In terms of price/performance definitely not ;-). Seriously, an Ax can be an excellent occasional point and shoot. All that's needed is to use P mode with a specific ISO setting (64 - A2 only - or 100), boost color, saturation and sharpness to taste, and save all these values in a custom setting. Then at the flick of a switch you have a point and shoot ready to be handed over to an inexperienced photographer for an easy snapshot.

You take the picture of your item. Now you need to get that picture out of your camera and into your computer. Your camera should have come with a cable to connect your camera to your computer. You should also have gotten a disk with some software that makes your computer and camera talk to each other. The end result you are looking for is to have a JPEG or GIF file saved to a place on your hard drive where you can find it later.

Yes you can, although it’s a little more work. You will need to put the images on to a memory card. In addition you will need to put them within the correct folder. This is the same folder the camera uses to save pictures. To determine this location, connect your camera (or load a memory card via a card reader) and use the Finder to locate pictures currently on the memory card. This is where you have to put the slideshow images.

Digital cameras usually fall into two classes, the USB mass-storage class (class8) or the still-image class (class6). Check the "compatible" name in prtconf -v output for the class of your digital camera. If a digital camera falls in the mass-storage class, it can be supported by the native scsa2usb driver and used as a disk drive. Just plug it in and vold will mount it. If you are running Solaris 10, you may need to stop and start vold.
