Educational Kinesiology is based on a unique integration of the learning process with kinesiology, the study of muscles and their movements. The intention of the Edu-K work is to invite the emergence of latent potential through the vehicle of the body––the repository of thoughts, feelings, and movement patterns. The Edu-K processes offer a structure for the continuous interweaving of thinking, feeling, and sensation––the integration of mental and physical functions.

Kinesiology is “the study of movement.” Educational Kinesiology (or Edu-K) is the study and application of natural movement experiences to facilitate learning. It focuses on the performance of specific physical activities that activate the brain for optimal storage and retrieval of information. Edu-K is a process for re-educating the mind/body system for accomplishing any skill or function with greater ease and efficiency. Edu-K includes both self-help and facilitated processes.

The first "K" was Applied Kinesiology (AK). It was developed by Dr. George Goodheart, DC, a chiropractor from Detroit. In the early 70's Dr. Goodheart began teaching his new technique to other doctors. One of his first students was Dr. John Thie, DC a chiropractor from Pasedena, CA. Dr. Thie took what he considered were simple, non-medical techniques from AK and created Touch For Health®. Today AK is still taught almost exclusively to doctors.

Many DOC faculty and staff are dedicated teachers and librarians. They teach pre-GED, GED, ESL, and some are vocational teachers as well. They come in at 7:30 a.m. and leave promptly at 3:30 p.m. If your last class ends at 3:30 p.m., be sensitive to their need to lock up and vacate the building at 3:30 p.m. promptly. Applied Kinesiology is performed by health care professionals. First, they have their basic education is what ever field they practice. For example, they might be a medical doctor, osteopath, chiropractor or a dentist. They then study Applied Kinesiology in a post graduate setting usually in weekend classes. The basic course takes over 100 hours of classroom study and many hours of study and practice at home.
