The Ronald McDonald Family Room is a comfortable rest area for families at the IWK Health Centre. It is more than just a room - it has a large living room, kitchen/dining area, an art room, and four bedrooms - almost like a mini Ronald McDonald House. And, just like Ronald McDonald House, the Family Room will be staffed -- a full-time coordinator and volunteers will provide support and security.

Ronald McDonald House and the IWK Health Centre have partnered on this project because in talking with families we know they need a place to relax and rejuvenate as they meet the challenges of caring for their loved ones in a hospital environment. At the same time, many families want to stay close to their loved ones in the Health Centre. The Ronald McDonald Family Room gives families an opportunity to do both.

The Family Room is a partnership between Ronald McDonald House Atlantic Canada and the IWK Health Centre, however, it is managed by Ronald McDonald House Atlantic Canada. The two partners will continue to dialogue long after the doors of the Family Room open, to ensure the Family Room delivers on its mandate to help families at the Health Centre.

The Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City serves as a "Home Away from Home" for families of children ages newborn to 18 receiving critical medical care at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Referrals are prioritized on a waiting list according to severity of the child's illness and distance traveled to Iowa City.

A Ronald McDonald House is a "home away from" home for families of children being treated for serious illness or injury. Many families travel to large medical centers to get the best treatment for their children. Ronald McDonald Houses provide a safe, comfortable place for a family to stay as they face the trauma of their child's illness. The family can stay in the House at a very nominal charge while the child is being diagnosed and treated for illness.

There are 232 Houses worldwide in the United States and 22 other countries. Approximately 6,000 rooms are available every night at Ronald McDonald Houses.

Concerned citizens in a community recognize the need to form a nonprofit corporation to establish a Ronald McDonald House. McDonald's Corporation owns the name "Ronald McDonald House." After meeting with the nonprofit organization and approving licensing of the new chapter and new House, McDonald's allows the use of the Ronald McDonald House name.

RMHC was established in memory of Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald's. The organization gives start-up grants to new Ronald McDonald Houses and contributes to other projects related to children and families. RMHC helps Ronald McDonald Houses by arranging national contributions for all Houses.

The House accepts the family of any child 18 or under who is being treated at any of the Valley hospitals as an in-patient or out-patient.

McDonald's provided an initial seed grant of $25,000 to build the Dallas Ronald McDonald House through the Ray Kroc Foundation now called Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). The Ronald McDonald House of Dallas is not owned by McDonald's. Each Ronald McDonald House is autonomous and is its own nonprofit corporation. The Ronald McDonald House of Dallas receives approximately 10% of its annual operating budget from RMHC and 90% from the local community.

Ronald McDonald Houses are located next to major women and children's hospitals in each state. Any family with a sick child receiving treatment at the hospital is able to stay at the House. However, the Houses are primarily set-up for families who have to travel long distances for their child to receive treatment.

Ninety percent of the funds needed to operate the Ronald McDonald House come from the Dallas community through generous individuals, corporations and community/civic groups. The Trains at NorthPark is a spectacular exhibit operated during the holiday season that also raises funds for the Ronald McDonald House, and Southwest Airlines sponsors the annual LUV Classic which benefits the House.

Families of dependent children through age 21 who are receiving treatment at Tulsa area hospitals and live outside a 25-mile radius of Tulsa are eligible to stay at the Ronald McDonald House.

A staff member is on site 24 hours a day. The office is open from 8:30 am to 9:00 pm on weekdays, and there are afternoon hours on the weekends.

Yes, but only on a space available basis at specific hotels or other facilities that have established a special rate for Ronald McDonald House families. The House accepts any child with a serious illness. Children with diseases easily transmitted to others (such as chicken pox or hepatitis) are not admitted. Children with AIDS are not excluded. The Board has reviewed this issue with expert help and concluded that transmission of AIDS by infected children is extremely unlikely.

The Board of Directors of Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Rio Grande Valley makes decisions affecting the Ronald McDonald House. The Board has a Chairperson, Chairperson Elect, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Board meets once a month and members serve one to three year terms as elected.

Parents can contact the House Manager directly and referrals to the House can also be made by your General Practitioner or the Medical or Social Work staff at your child's Hospital. The initial enquiry is made directly to the House Manager who can complete the booking and advise you on the House facilities and availability of rooms.

RMHC supports a number of other programs that help seriously ill children to live happier, healthier lives. The Charity's cornerstone program is the 12 Ronald McDonald Houses located around Australia. In addition to the Houses, Ronald McDonald House Charities supports: The Ronald McDonald Learning Program: This provides specialist education to children who are recovering from serious illness.

McDonald's Australia Limited pays all administration costs for RMHC. This means that one hundred cents of every dollar donated goes directly RMHC programs supporting seriously ill children and their families. Individual Ronald McDonald Houses receive funding for capital projects from Ronald McDonald House Charities, but they need to cover their own operating expenses.

Unlike Ronald McDonald House, which provides a temporary home for families who have children receiving medical care/treatments in a hospital, Rose Cherry's Home for Kids provides a home-like environment in which children can receive medical care.

This popular fundraiser benefits seriously ill children by helping provide a place for them and their families to stay while they are out of town for medical treatment.

The families of children who are in active treatment (scheduled for at least three appointments per week) at any Baltimore hospital are eligible to stay at RMH. The patient must be 21 years of age or younger, and the family must have a permanent residence outside of Baltimore city.
