An author writing for a publication must follow the rules established by the publisher to avoid inconsistencies among journal articles or book chapters. For example, without rules of style, three different manuscripts might use sub-test, subtest, and Subtest in one issue of a journal or book. Although the meaning of the word is the same (in this case, subtest is APA style), such variations in style may distract or confuse the reader.

APA style calls for a list of References instead of a bibliography. The requirements of a reference list are that all references cited in the text of a paper must be listed alphabetically by first author's last name in the list of References and that all references listed must be cited within the text. A bibliography, on the other hand, typically includes resources in addition to those cited in the text and may include annotated descriptions of the items listed.

The Court itself provides an excellent finding aid, Where to Obtain Supreme Court Decisions, on its web site. Textual Supreme Court records are also held in the National Archives Building in Washington, DC, while recorded oral arguments are in the National Archives at College Park. Date: In MLA, the date follows the publisher in the citation, and is not in parentheses. In APA, the date follows the author and is in parentheses. Author's Name: In MLA, the author's full name (first and last) is spelled out. In APA, the author's last name is spelled out and the first name is reduced to initials. Capitalization: In MLA, all major words in the title are capitalized, and the title is underlined.

If you have gone to a conference and picked up a handout (or obtained a copy) of a paper or poster presentation and would like to use information from that handout, in section 4.16 (p. 260) the APA Publication Manual does describe how to reference this type of source. On June 28th, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (a three-judge panel) ruled essentially that money damages cannot be awarded for very old Indian land claims. Before downloading, disable any virus protection program you may be running as these can interfere with the process. Be sure to run the installation while still online. Once the installation is complete and the program is up and running, remember to turn your virus protection back on.

Once a paper is already written in a word processor, you will need to cut and paste the fields into APA Style-Helper 3.0. Then follow the instructions for "Sending" your document to a word processor. Once there, you will need to cut and paste the parts of your paper in to the appropriate sections on the APA layout. Be careful not to overwrite existing work when you send your materials from the APA-Style Helper back to your word processor!

Only initials are used for the author's first and middle names. Names are also inverted, last to first to middle. Example: Miller, J. K. Only the first letter of the first word of the title of books and articles is capitalized, with the exception of proper nouns. The first word of subtitles (after a colon) is also capitalized. Everything else is written lowercase.
