LOIs are not required for IDEA (both regular and “junior investigator”), postdoc fellowships, and dissertation awards. All other award types (CRCs, the Translational Research Award, and IDEA-competitive renewal) require an LOI. Be sure to contact us, if you have any questions!

LOIs are due 30 days before the receipt date. Although LOIs are not required, the information in the LOI will assist NHLBI in planning the review and in identifying responsiveness issues at an early stage.

You need to follow the same signatory procedures for LOIs that carry funds with them as for full applications, but registration packages do not require signatures.

Since 1996, most preliminary agreements relating to the purchase of a property must state the exact square meters of the property being sold. This measurement is calculated in a national law, “loi Carrez”, which defines what is livable surface and what is not. For example, space under a ceiling (180 cm), typical in roof top apartments, cannot be measured as livable space. To measure a property, a real estate agent or a certified expert is required.

Your contact information, co-PI’s information (if applicable), your key personnel including institution affiliations for all of the above, what you are proposing, and what areas of expertise you think your application most covers. This last piece of information is valuable to the Review Administrators so that they can make sure the appropriate experts are represented on the study section. Letters of intent help the NIH staff gauge needs for the scientific review of the applications. In addition, sometimes letters of intent are used to gauge responsiveness to the RFA, and in some cases applicants can be informed, before writing an entire application, that their application may be deemed unresponsive. Letters should be brief and there is no standard format.

Letters of Intent will only be accepted by email. Letters of Intent submitted by hard copy or fax will not be accepted. Full proposals will only be accepted through grants.gov. Full proposals submitted by email, fax or hard copy will not be accepted. Graduate students may be included on applications. Graduate students should not be listed as principal investigators, co-principal investigators, or senior personnel.

For most award mechanisms, yes, you may. For certain award mechanisms, however, Letters of Intent are required. In that case, failure to submit a Letter of Intent may render your proposal noncompliant. Letters of Intent are important to help us recruit qualified reviewers for peer review of your proposal.

When completing the Work Experience and Academic Background screens of your LOI CV, you must indicate the positions or degrees that you would like printed as part of your form by clicking the Print check box for that position or degree. If more than five positions or three degrees are selected, the most recent five positions or three degrees (based on start date) will be printed.

No. BWF does not require a letter of intent prior to beginning an application. However, you MUST be nominated by a degree-granting institution in order to apply to this program. An “institution” includes its medical school, graduate schools, and all affiliated hospitals or research institutes. You should contact the appropriate officials (generally the grants office, office of research, or office of sponsored programs) for information about the nomination process at your institution.

The letter of intent should identify a PI, the primary institution, and any associated institutions in the local “consortium”. The letter should also state whether or not the applicant will apply as an RCC or DCC. The letter should be submitted by July 19, 2005 .
