Launch of the Europa Orbiter mission has been delayed until perhaps 2006 or 2007. Travel time to Jupiter is about 3 years, then it takes another 2.5 years or so to drop into Europa orbit. This means arrival in 2013 or 2014. The mission itself would last only a month or two after that, but enough to make critical measurements.

Europa's geological features (including bands, ridges, chaos, and multi-ringed impact structures) are indicative of warm, mobile, glacial ice at relatively shallow depths, and sometimes reaching the surface. Beneath this warm "slushy" ice could be a liquid water ocean, but it is difficult to be certain with the data that are in hand. Tidal heating is greatly aided by the presence of an ocean, so a warm near-surface is suggestive of a subsurface ocean.

The sum of theoretical and observational data indicate that Europa's the icy shell is ~15 to 25 km thick, overlying an ocean approximately 80 km deep. A comprehensive theoretical estimate of the ice shell thickness is given by Ojakangas and Stevenson (1989), who look at the influences of tidal and radiogenic heating. They find that the ice shell should be an average thickness of ~20 to 30 km.

No one knows for sure. There are several theories as to why the ocean is usually blue. Some scientists believe that when sunlight hits seawater, part of the white light is absorbed and part is reflected. White light is composed of various shades (all the colors in the rainbow). Seawater does not absorb blue light, so the blue light is reflected outwards. Some scientists believe that suspended matter in the sea is responsible for its blue color.

It is salty because it has a lot of salt in it! Salt is a mineral that is found in soil and rocks, too. Flowing water picks up some salt and carries it to rivers. Rivers carry it to seas. Since this has been happening for millions of years, the oceans now have a lot of salt-about one cup per gallon!

When users walk or run on the Orbiter, they do not contact hard, unyielding surfaces. We hope you like 'Orbiter' as much as we do.

Galileo imaging shows that Europa's surface is sparsely cratered, meaning that the surface is probably young. Simulations of comet and asteroid orbits indicate that it is primarily comets which slam into Europa and the other Galilean satellites. From the modeled and observed numbers of comets in the vicinity of Jupiter today, estimates can be made for the surface age of Europa based on the number and sizes of the moon's impact craters.

In close-up pictures of Europa's "chaos" region, it can be seen that there are "blocks" or "plates" which have moved about relative to one another. These have informally been referred to as "icebergs," but this term is improperly suggestive, invoking visions of ice chunks floating in terrestrial polar seas. On Europa it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to melt from a subsurface ocean all the way to the surface.

According to David Morrison in the introduction to the book "Satellites of Jupiter," both Americans and Russians can lay some claim to the discovery. He writes: "Near-infrared photometry provided the first clue to surface composition; in a landmark abstract Kuiper (1957) suggested from limited data, never published, that Europa and Ganymede had water ice surfaces, and Moroz (1961) later came to the same conclusion from similar broadband infrared observations."

Salt water is very good for healing, unfortunately due to pollution the sea in certain areas may contain microorganisms, which may cause infections. Swimming in the ocean is OK as long as you clean the wound properly afterwards with the cleaning solution provided. Try to avoid public pools as they are full of bacteria, freshwater lakes and streams are fine though.

The ocean dives are on the numerous southeast Florida shipwrecks. Depths range from 40 feet to over 300 so this is an ideal place for all levels of technical diver training. Some of the more popular area wrecks include the Hydro Atlantic, Lowrance, Ande, Skye Cliffe, Ronald B. Johnson / Corey N. Chris, Northern Light, Vitric, Ocean Freeze, and many others.

Significant sunlight can only penetrate 100 meters freely. Because seawater is relatively transparent, about 5% of sunlight penetrates to a depth of 262 feet (80 meters). Yes and No. Orbiter does not have a built in feature to write a flight plan and set it on auto-pilot. Therefore there is no point to point hands off auto-pilot. However Orbiter has several wonderful auto-pilot functions that rotate or maintain the ships relative position. These are well document in the manual and they make many of the in flight maneuvers simple.

Orbiter will detect contact when a ship lands or crashes on a planet surface. All other objects are currently not detected and will pass right through one another. The exception to this is in docking mode. In this mode you can dock at the assigned port. If you miss the port or come in too fast, your ship will pass right throug as if it isn't there.

You can not change the date from within the program. However you can change the date in any scenario file with notepad. For example open Deltaglider Mk3.scn in the scenarios folder and look under; BEGIN_ENVIRONMENT

You create a new scenario. Simple press [Ctrl][S] when you want to save. Exit to the main menu Launchpad and under the scenario tab select the save current button. Type in a scenario name.

For your first orbit you should select the Delta Glider. Save the Space Shuttle Atlantis for when you have experience. Read the flight checklist in the manual or run any of the fine tutorials on this subject available on the web.
