The server that WebCT runs on is a powerful computer and very seldom is it heavily loaded. Generally, the reason that WebCT's response is slow is due to network connections that a person uses to reach WebCT. The connection speed is no faster than the slowest network link between the client and the server. Most of these network links are not under the control of you, the customer, nor Rensselaer, the service provider.

Establish an internet account: To access WebCT from home, you must first establish an account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP). An ISP is generally a private company not affiliated with Montana State which will provide access to the Internet. There is usually a monthly fee associated with the services of an ISP.

If you cannot get the WebCT login page to open, or if it is telling you that you have an incorrect user ID or password, contact the Information Technology Office Help Desk at 816-271-4555. For basic course access, all you require is a web browser that has Java and Javascript enabled, and accepts cookies. You can use a variety of software programs to create your course materials, ranging from Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to HTML editors. You can also include any content in your course that can be displayed using a Web browser (e.g. PDF files, audio and video clips, animations, and graphics).

Since WebCT is internet-based, it is accessible from all computers in the lab. As certain features of WebCT differ between platforms (Macintosh and Windows), be certain to ask for assistance if you encounter any problems while using WebCT.

WebCT is a course management system that some instructors use to deliver their on-line materials. Besides providing access to on-line content, WebCT can also be used to deliver on-line exams and quizzes, provide individual students with access to their grades, and serve as an on-line discussion board. If your instructor is using WebCT it will appear when you access your course via the MyMCC portal. For more info on how to use WebCT, see the distance learning tutorial pages.

To gain hands-on experience using WebCT tools, log onto the WebCT orientation course by going to: http://webct.armstrong.edu:8900/webct/homearea/homearea. Log in with the WebCT ID: start15 and WebCT Password: start15.

Only students registered in a course for which the instructor has chosen to use WebCT may access the course. Check with your instructor for confirmation.

The most probable reason is that your IT administrator has denied general access to unauthorised internet addresses. The solution is to request your IT administrator to grant you specific permission to access WebCT. See the answer above for information on firewall settings. You are not registered for this course(s), only students who are officially registered are allowed to access their course(s) on WebCT.

By adjusting your browser settings, you can optimize your browser for WebCT. Browser setting adjustment includes: (a) setting the browser cache, (b) enabling Java, (c) enabling cookies. Choose one of the following links to find out more: If your instructor uses material in the course that requires a browser plug-in or special software for viewing, they will provide the necessary information on how/where to acquire and install the programs.

Any computer that has an Internet connection can access WebCT Vista. While the computers on campus are configured properly to use WebCT Vista, make sure your run a browser check from any off-campus machine to ensure you are using a supported browser and that the computer you are using is set up correctly. Vista uses pop up windows for certain functions such as assessments. Pop up blockers must be disabled on your computer to use WebCT Vista properly.

This access is provided to you only after your application has been fully approved, and your name has been added to the instructor’s electronic class list (accessed by the instructor through BearFacts for faculty). It is in your best interest to communicate with the instructor, department, and school to facilitate the review of your application in a timely manner once you have submitted it, and paid fees.

You must check out a computer in the student lab, computers in the reference area of the Library do not have access to WebCT courses The Computer Labs at any RCC Campus. Once you register at RCC for a class you are assigned a login and a password. Please ask one of the lab aides (in the blue vests) for help if you run into difficulty. You can check the computer lab schedule on both campuses by going to their Web site.

times you may not be able to log in to UVLink because UVSC is updating information. At that time there are additional ways to log into WebCT. Go to the login screen for UVLink. Scroll down to "Can't login? Don't Panic!" Click on WebCT / My Courses; it is the backdoor entrance for WebCT. The login and password are the same that are used to log in to UVLink. It is possible that you have additional security set on your home computer. There is a “Check Browser” link on the WebCT entry page which should help you access WebCT. If you are still unable to access WebCT, please contact the Service Desk.

If you are having problems connecting from home, see the section on problems connecting from off-campus below. Some Internet Service Providers use a Proxy Server for access to your e-mail, etc. This proxy server may prevent access to WebCT courses. If you can connect to your courses while on-campus but not from home, check your proxy server settings (in Netscape, go to "Edit", "Preferences"; in Internet Explorer, go to ""Tools", "Internet Options").

Yes, all you need is a web browser and access to the Internet. You log in using the same address (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/webct/) and enter your UCL username and password as normal. Is your password longer than 8 characters? If so, type the first 8 characters only into the password box. If no, it’s possible your password has come out of synch with the WebCT system. Please change your password using the web form at: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/is/passwords/changepw.

It is not a problem to download the program on a slow dial up connection. The audio component will take the longest as it is a rather large file. If your connection drops during download you can easily resume when connected again. Download will take approximately 48 minutes on a very slow connection.

The Library is currently not able to offer TELNET access to a text-only version of the LC Online Catalog. An alternative interface is available using the Library's Z39.50 Gateway. This interface works well with text-based browsers, such as Lynx. To learn more about the Z39.50 protocol for information retrieval, visit the Z39.50 Maintenance Agency Page. The Library is aware of the need for text-based access to the Online Catalog to satisfy the needs of its offsite users.
