When run for the first time, DenyHosts will create a work directory. The work directory will ultimately store the data collected and the files are in a human readable format, for each editing, if necessary. DenyHosts then processes the sshd server log (typically, this is /var/log/secure, /var/log/auth.log, etc) and determines which hosts have unsuccessfully attempted to gain access to the ssh server. DenyHosts is a Python script that analyzes the sshd server log messages to determine what hosts are attempting to hack into your system. It also determines what user accounts are being targeted. It keeps track of the frequency of attempts from each host. Additionally, upon discovering a repeated attack host, the /etc/hosts.deny file is updated to prevent future break-in attempts from that host.

Beginning with version 1.1.1, DenyHosts can email reports to SMTP servers that require username/password authentication. If your SMTP server requires authentication you will need to set the following parameters in your denyhosts.cfg file:

Error code 2020 means that both fax machines or computers never got connected. The problem could be that the number was not a fax number, or the wrong number was dialed. Also, if you do not have long distance service, and the fax number is long distance, you will get error code 2020. Also, be sure that the number you enter into our fax program to dial is the EXACT number that needs to be dialed. Look in the Send Fax box in the lower right hand corner, where it says, [Fax# Prefix].

Our mail server is using 'pop before smtp' or 'smtp after pop' technology. In other word, email user must do a pop authentication (checking email) so that your IP will be kept in our mail server for about 30 minutes. Within this period, you are allowed to send email via our smtp / outgoing mail server. Using this technology, you are allowed to send mail regardless which ISP you connect to Internet.

I run a number of Linux servers and I noticed that one of them was hacked into. Upon browsing my sshd log I noticed that the system was targeted for some time and eventually, somebody hacked out a password. Had I been using DenyHosts, that never would've happened (if only I had the foresight to write this script before my system was compromised!). I then looked at the logs of my other servers, and noticed hundreds of break-in attempts.

The way we do this is to require our customers to log into their POP accounts to receive mail before begin able to send their mail. For users of Microsoft Outlook this means you might get an error on occasion, but on the next attempt to send will work fine. If you want it to try to send again right away just use the tools menu and the send item. In Outlook 98 the F5 key will initiate a full re-send.

To submit your report electronically, you should send an email to prlfiles@nysprl.com. You should not put your report in the body of the email; this will delay processing of the report. Instead, you should send the report as an attachment to the email; you will have to consult the help facility for your email service on how to do this, as the procedures can vary quite substantially. OmniOutliner documents are stored in a type of folder called a file wrapper. File wrappers appear to be normal files in the Finder. Apple Mail will treat file wrappers like normal files and transparently zip them when you attach them to an email. Receivers of your email who also use Apple Mail will never know that they received a zipped folder -- they'll just see your OmniOutliner document.

Assuming that you have logrotate installed on your system and is configured to use the /etc/logrotate.d directory for it's configuration files then you can simply create a file, /etc/logrotate.d/denyhosts, edit it and save it. MBSA relies on Internet Explorer (IE) settings to download files. Some corporate environments may also use a proxy server. Consequently, the client computer might not be configured correctly to access the Internet through a proxy server. If your network is configured to support auto detection of proxy servers, select Automatically detect settings.

Each thread in a process is assigned a fixed area for its procedure-call stack. The stubs normally marshall and unmarshall parameters in space allocated on the thread's stack. If the parameters are large, the stack size may be exceeded. In most thread implementations, the stack size cannot be increased after the thread is created. For threads created explicitly by your application, you can adjust the size of the thread stack by setting an attribute before calling pthread_create().
