Frequently Asked Questions

Will it be difficult for my child to be fitted with an artificial eye?

FAQ - Pediatric Ocular Prostheses
Yes and No. Each child is different in mood, personality, disposition and what they have gone through prior to this referral for an artificial eye. We can only determine this during the initial evaluation. As with all patients we want to take an impression moulding of the cavity. This is not a painful procedure, but we do require the child to be relaxed (as possible) and not squeeze the eyelids.

Is it possible to see with artificial eye?

Chinmaya Ocular Prosthetics Center - FAQs
This is a frequently asked question; of course the answer is 'NO'. The purpose of artificial eye is to make the damaged eye 'look like' normal eye thereby restoring the normal appearance of the face. However there are 'Bionic Eyes' being developed by various groups that are based on computer based chips mounted on spectacles and the images are processed by software before sending to the brain. Most of these are still experimental and wide commercial use has not started.

Can I wear artificial eye continuously?

Chinmaya Ocular Prosthetics Center - FAQs
Artificial eyes can be worn continuously if they have been made after taking the impression of the eye socket (Custom artificial eyes). The readymade or stock artificial eyes available in the shops should not be worn continuously because of discharge collection behind the artificial eye that causes inflammation and socket contraction in long run. This socket contraction may need surgical correction on a later date to fit an ocular prosthesis.

Is it difficult for my child to adapt to wearing the prosthesis?

FAQ - Pediatric Ocular Prostheses
It is amazing how quickly a young child can adjust to monocular vision and the wearing an artificial eye, as compared to the adult prosthetic eye wearer who is readjusting from a lifetime of having depth perception. It becomes a second nature to a child, and they are quite uninhibited. We have parent and teacher stories of children removing the prosthesis during 'show and tell' in school, or when complimented by strangers about how pretty their eyes are.

Why does my child need an ocular prosthesis after an eye loss?

FAQ - Pediatric Ocular Prostheses
There are four reasons to wear an ocular prosthesis: Comfort, Cosmesis, plus continued Bony Orbital Wall, and Eyelid development. The first two reasons are of immediate importance for parent and child. Comfort is gained with a properly fitted prosthesis, (by relieving the physical stress caused by eye volume loss, and drooping of the eyelid). Cosmesis is recaptured with a lifelike appearance that is once more acceptable to you, your child and peers.

Yes, participation in contact sports is possible providing you wear protective polycarbonate glasses to protect both your eye and the prosthesis. Kentucky requires that children have an eye exam before attending school. Kids in pre-school programs such as Kentucky Head Start typically must have an exam. When should a child see an eye doctor?

Georgia Ophthalmology Associates
At the time of birth a child???s vision is not fully developed. Major changes take place in the first years of life. Significant eye problems in very young children are relatively uncommon (except for crossed eyes) but, when present, they must be treated very early in life. Otherwise, vision does not develop in the problem eye. The loss of sight in that eye is permanent and cannot be corrected with glasses. Infants and children need to have their eyes examined between 3 and 6 months of age.

Generally we would start testing children at about age 3 years, however if you notice any changes in your child’s vision or that they seem to have a turn in one eye you should bring your child in to have their eyes examined earlier. We can use a wide range of tests on children and even have picture charts if your child is too young to know letters.
