Frequently Asked Questions

Do pilots read papers or something during long haul flights?

Frequently Asked Questions No 15
There is no fixed policy as to whether pilots can read papers during long haul flights. Some Airlines are very strict about it whilst others allow this practice provided it does not affect the safety of the flight. Anyway, it is normal for pilots to read Flight Manuals in the air to refresh their knowledge occasionally. This is done in the lean period of a long cruise in between reporting points. Whilst one is reading, the other pilot would be in control at any one time.

Why are there no medium/long haul flights listed?

All about my Budget Airlines website.
Well, my definition of a medium/long haul flight is anything pushing 5 hours. In 5 hours you can cross America, cross Australia, and get from London to Athens. People are quite happy to be unfed, not to have a TV screen to watch, and to put up with minimal leg room. Any more time than that, and they start to get hungry, and start getting cramp. Which with DVT these days isn't such a good idea. Therefore budget airlines haven't quite hacked into the long haul market yet.

E.3) What equipment is recommended for this long haul?

Athens-to-Atlanta Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Helmet required. Wear a properly fastened helmet (ANSI, ASTM, or Snell approved), at all times you are on your skates. Back brake highly recommended, even for 5-wheel skates. You'll have to stop at stop signs and red lights. Your brake will also be used to control your speed on the steep downhills. Make sure your skates are comfortable. Don't wear new skates or you may have unexpected pain. Wear smooth synthetic socks. Ribbed and wet cotton socks will rub blisters pretty quick.

What does the flight deck crew do during long-haul flights? Do they take turns to sleep?

Frequently Asked Questions No 13
Modern jet engines today are generally made to be very robust or else the FAA would not have certified them for commercial use in airplanes. I have mentioned about the 'chicken gun test' at the development stages of jet engine design in my air safety topic. During the test, plastic chickens are fired at the engines to see if it would cause damage to the turbine blades. This was to simulate live birds colliding with the airplane's engines.

This is purely a factor of flying ability and varies from person to person. The course will take you 6-8 weeks to complete. Some schools do advertise that a PPL can be completed in 4 weeks. Due to the course content and flying required this is extremely unlikely in practice.
