VCD: If your DVD player supports VCD playback, simply insert the disc and wait for the menu to come up. Press the corresponding number on your remote for the selection you would like to view, or use the "next/previous chapter" functions to move between episodes. DVD-R: If your DVD player supports DVD-R playback, simply insert the disc, wait for the menu to come up, use the arrow keys to highlight your selection, then select it to view.

VCD: Insert the disc into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive and play the VCD in your favorite program (WinDVD or Windows Media Player is recommended). APEX and RAITE DVD drives can recognize CDR, CDRW, and VCD. SONY and PANASONIC DVD drives can not read the VCD that stored in the CDR media. However they can read VCD on the CDRW media. And they can read audio-only VCD.

Sometimes this problem is caused by media incompatibility issues. It's not likely. DVD circuitry is completely different, the pickup laser is a different wavelength, the tracking control is more precise, etc. No hardware upgrades have been announced, and in any case they would probably be more expensive than buying a DVD player to put next to the laserdisc player.
