McKee Nelson supports and shares this sense of duty, and in the summer of 2005 we established a formal pro bono program to increase the opportunities our lawyers have to give back. We launched our Giving Back and Volunteering scheme in 2005. You can get involved with the Freelaw project run by the School of Law. Students operate on a roster basis to offer a weekly free legal advice session for local residents. Most of the cases we place with volunteer attorneys are family law cases including victims of domestic violence. However, we place cases in a variety of areas of law including guardianship, adoption, fraud, estate planning, probate and bankruptcy. We need attorneys on our list for all areas of law so we can call on them as the need arises.

Yes. An externship at a Qualified Public Interest Organization automatically fulfills the pro bono requirement - so long as you have filed the Statement of Intent, and the externship is a minimum of two units.

On June 23, 1993, the Supreme Court of Florida issued its opinion adopting the new pro bono rules effective October 1, 1993. These pro bono rules provide more definition and structure to the lawyer's responsibility to provide pro bono legal services to the poor.
