The first rule is don't panic. There are many factors you first need to take into consideration. First, how far into your pregnancy are you? By 14 weeks 100% of healthy pregnancies will be able to locate the fetal heartbeat with a baby heartbeat monitor. So if your pregnancy is somewhere between 8-14 weeks you'll just have to be patient. The baby may be in a position where hearing the heartbeat is difficult.

Your baby's heartbeat is much faster than your own. Sometimes it sounds like the fast "clippety-clop" of a galloping horse. You can distinguish your heartbeat from your baby's based on the heart rate, yours being the slower one. When using the Fetal Doppler, you may also hear a "swishing" sound, this is the sound of your blood flow. Depending on your circumstances we would either listen regularly with a sonicaid similar to the one used by the midwife at your antenatal appointments. Or in some circumstances we would put you on continuous monitoring that would give us a constant recording of the baby's heart beat.

The FDA regulates Fetal Doppler ultrasound. No harmful effects on the fetus have ever been reported. The Mayo Clinic says "In 30 years of regular use, no adverse effects have ever been demonstrated from ultrasound testing. Research has been done investigating both the noise produced in utero and the heat produced by ultrasound, and no problems have ever been detected from its use in exposed babies.

Dopplers can detect the heartbeat from as early as 10-12 weeks however for some it may be later than this. Please refer to Doppler Tips for best results.

Hearing loss does not affect all frequencies or pitches equally in most cases. The vowel sounds of speech (a, e, i, o, u) are louder and lower-pitched, and are therefore easier to hear. The consonant sounds such as "th" or "s" or "f" or "k", etc. are higher-pitched and softer, making them harder to hear.

Another program may have turned off the speaker or headphones or whatever interface to which you're listening. Obviously, tkbiff cannot guess which one that might be, so it assumes you are controlling that yourself. To check the status of where sound is going, run audiocontrol and then, for example, if you want sound to come out of the speakers, click on Speaker.

Even term babies do not have completely developed eyesight, and it is thought that for the first 2-3 months babies can only see in black and white. Talk to your baby while you are pregnant as he or she can hear you and can also distinguish your voice from others.

The xAP protocol specifies a special control message, called a heartbeat. Wherever possible, xAP enabled devices and applications are encourage to broadcast this message periodically to provide a network-wide indication of system health. The heartbeat interval is defined at the discretion of the application developer - it is typically of the order of a 15 secs-5 mins depending on the application. xAP promotes the use of regular heartbeats.
