Is caring for the baby after the Bris difficult?

Rabbi Michael Henesch - Certified Mohel | FAQ |
I have been told by nurses that my after care instructions are easier to follow than those for babies that are circumcised in the hospital and brought home. After the Bris, I will explain how to care for the baby first by demonstrating what you need to do and then providing explicit written instructions to reinforce what I have told you. I am always available to answer questions, and will follow up shortly after the Bris to see how everyone is doing. Follow your doctor's schedule.

Why does the baby drink wine before the bris?

zachary1e
The baby is usually given a drop of wine (or grape juice) before the bris, to commemorate the drop of blood (redness of the wine) that he is giving to come in to the Jewish covenant. The wine also has the affect of calming the baby if he is crying. No wine is given if the parents do not wish so.

Will it be difficult for me to learn to sign with our baby?

Sign2Me.com | FAQs
No. Successfully communicating with your baby does not require fluency in ASL. Rather, we recommend introducing signs that are relevant to your child's interaction with the world. We provide a collection of 145 illustrated signs in the SIGN with your BABY® Book, all of which are demonstrated by author Joseph Garcia on the Instructional Video, and 54 of the most commonly-used signs on the Quick Reference Guide, from which you may select signs that are meaningful to your baby.

When should I start caring for my baby's teeth?

HIVdent Patient Education: Infant Care
soon as your baby's teeth appear, clean them with a piece of gauze or a damp washcloth at least once a day or after each feeding. When all of the baby teeth are in, brush them gently with a fluoride toothpaste, using a pea-sized dab of toothpaste. Also use an extra soft, children's toothbrush. It helps to have your baby lay his or her head on your lap so you can see the teeth better when you brush. After brushing, make sure your child spits out all of the toothpaste and rinses with water.

What is Bris Milah?

What is A Bris Milah RITUAL Circumcision
The word itself means "Covenant of Circumcision". It is the sign attesting to the everlasting covenant that G-d established with Abraham and his descendants (Genesis 17). It was then reiterated through Moses 500 years later: "And on the 8th day he shall have his foreskin circumcised" (Leviticus 12:3).

Can a bris take place at night?

Frequently Asked Questions - Emoil.com/Emohel.com
No. From the verse in Leviticus 12:3, we learn that the rite must be performed "on the eighth day," even if it is the Sabbath; and during the daylight hours, not at night.

Can a bris take place on Shabbat?

Frequently Asked Questions - Emoil.com/Emohel.com
Yes, and on all holidays (Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, etc.) and festivals (Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot). It presupposes you have a mohel who lives in your area. If not, one would import a mohel who could spend Shabbat in the neighborhood within walking distance of the home or synagogue where the bris will take place. If no mohel is available or arrangements cannot be made to bring in a mohel, then the bris will have to be delayed.
Related Questions

Do I need a challah for the Bris?

Frequently Asked Questions - Emoil.com/Emohel.com
It adds a festive element, but it's not essential. If there is no challah, one may recite the blessing over a bagel or a slice of bread. If you'd like to give someone an honor at the bris who may not be comfortable holding the baby, letting them recite the blessing over the bread is a very nice thing to do.

What if you are not available when I call you to do my child's bris?

Frequently Asked Questions - Emoil.com/Emohel.com
From time to time, I may not be available for the specific time that you wish to schedule your event. If I am not available, I will recommend another traditional mohel who shares my approach, both religiously and medically, to Brit Milah.

Question: Sometimes my baby is sleepy and difficult to wake for a feeding, what should I do?

Frequently Asked Questions
We have all heard the cliche, "Let sleeping babies lie." It sounds like a lovely idea, but for newborns there is a slight flaw in the logic. A typical breastfed newborn needs to eat 8-12 times in a 24 hour period. That works out to approximately every 2-3 hours. Sadly, some newborns can be very tired as a result of difficult labor or jaundice. It is not uncommon for some of these babies to be so sleepy that they may want to sleep 5-6 hours at a time, especially during the day.
