Make sure that you are using the SCSI cable that came with the scanner. SCSI devices are very dependent on signal streng_th and timing. Using longer cables changes the signal streng_th and timing and will frequently prevent the scanner from functioning normally. Exceeding 10' cable length is not advisable in any case. If you are having difficulties using a different cable, try the Mustek cable to see if it will work. Mustek's cables have the number 20276 printed on the cable.

Generally, no. Because of the high frequencies involved, special coax suitable for microwave use is required to keep the losses low. Several people have asked if they can substitute RG-58, RG-8 or RG-214. These coax types have unacceptably high losses at these frequencies. People occasionally ask about 75 ohm TV/satellite coax as well (RG-62), which is a definite no-go because of the incorrect impedance. Belden 9913 is questionable because of "water piping" problems.

There are several methods for computer connection, but it appears that Ethernet 10BaseT is emerging as the most predominant method. Although it probably would be cheaper to produce the cable modem as an internal card for the computer, this would require different printed-circuit cards for different kinds of computers, and additionally would make the demarcation between cable network and the subscriber's computer too fuzzy.

Some types of broadband modems require that you use a cross-over cable to connect to the broadband router. Contact your ISP to determine which type of cable you must use.

You need an RJ45 cable with connectors on both ends. You may purchase a 14' cable from SATS in the West Building or at one of the local computer stores. Students who reside off campus can obtain internet connectivity via a modem through an outside Internet Service Provider (ISP) or through a service provided by the University called Merit or MichNet. The charge for MichNet service is $40 a semester or $100 for a year.

Answer: Shutting the door on the cable is generally not a good idea. See this thread for a visual example of how just a little damage to the cable can effect signal strength. A popular method of routing the cable is through an open window. Another idea is to mount the antenna on the trunk of your car and close the trunk door on it. The weatherstripping there is supposed to be more forgiving.

You can, and some do, in certain special circumstances. If you're standing somewhere (on top of a building or hill) and want to sense stations at a distance, you can use a directional gain antenna to "warscan" by rotating it on a camera tripod or just aiming it by hand.
