You need to have access to a computer system that is capable of streaming the video lectures. See the system requirements for this information and links to necessary plug-ins. All students intending to take a course via distance education must first view a sample lecture to be sure their system is adequate before registering. It is important to determine this before classes start.

Registration for a distance education course is no different than that for a regular classroom taught course. In the catalog distance education courses are identified by a satellite dish next to the section number. Continuing students now have the option of resistering via the Internet with Cuesta's online registeration program "WEBReg". If you are a new student to the college you will first need to be admitted to the college.

Distance education and local students follow the same schedule of due dates for assignments and exams. The lag time between the actual lecture and the availability of the online video is taken into account when determining these dates. Distance Learning (DL), also known as Distance Education (DE), is simply learning from a distance, usually from home, or from a conveniently located off-campus site. DL allows adults to earn college credits, even entire degrees, without ever leaving home.

Most internet delivered courses at Cuesta follow the same semester schedule as regular classroom taught courses. In some cases students of a distance education course are required to meet prior to the start of the regular semester. You will be notified by the instructor of a course when any meeting times are scheduled.

For an on-line course, at-home hardware must include the following; access to a computer having a Pentium processor running Windows 95 or higher, at least 32 MB RAM, and a minimum of a 28.8 Kbps modem. Macintosh users must have System 7 or higher. A connection to the Internet using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher,is required along with an Internet email account supplied by the college.

Most distance education programs use the Internet, email, and online discussion technologies to deliver course content and promote student-teacher interaction. Therefore, the minimum requirement would be access to the Internet and a computer with the necessary software (word-processing, spreadsheet, anti-virus protection) to complete your course work. Check with your instructor for a list of the specific technology requirements.

You need reliable access to a computer if you want to take an online course and some video-based courses. Many video-based and correspondence course instructors prefer to use e-mail for corresponding with students.

All CDs, DVDs and any other materials specified on your packing slip must be returned to the CDE or ViaTech Publishing Solutions. Courses registered prior to Fall 2007 should be returned to the CDE. Courses registered Fall 2007 or after should be returned to ViaTech via the shipping label provided for you. All PSEO and NextStep students must return their textbooks as well.

A distance education student is one enrolled in classes at TAMU-CC who lives outside the Corpus Christi Standard Metropolitan area. If a student takes any coursework on campus, that student is not considered a distance student. On the other hand, if a student takes *only* WebCT-based courses, that student may be considered a distance learner. Remote Access refers to the ability to access library electronic resources from outside of the library building.

Distance education proposals, after review by the appropriate college council, are sent to the UCC Academic Standards and Policies Subcommittee. The Subcommittee then recommends the proposal for either disapproval or disapproval by the UCC at large. This expedited process is developed to comply with Article 42 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The UCC, however, cannot make a final recommendation on these courses until they have been facilitated through the Office of Extended Studies.

In the event that a course has a classroom exam, students whose primary residence is outside the six New England states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont) need to make arrangements through Academic Services to have the exam proctored at a school local to them. Students residing in the New England area must take any in-class exam on campus as scheduled by the instructor.

Many classes found in the catalog follow a traditional semester calendar (August to December, January to May, and May to August). Some are accelerated, and others are open enrollment. The classes following the semester calendar generally have specific time periods for taking exams and submitting assignments. A good rule: check with the instructor before you register for the minimum completion period.

No. All distance education courses follow the SFU calendar year, with courses beginning in January, May or September and ending within 13 weeks of the start date, plus final examinations, if applicable. Each course has its own deadlines for assignments and examinations, which must be followed. Yes, you can, but you must proceed with caution. You may only receive your degree or certificate from the institution that offers the program.

Yes. If you are an SFU student it is your responsibility to drop immediately any courses in which you've enrolled if you no longer have the prerequisites or co-requisites, as there will be no checking of these after final grades are received. Please also note that the new web enrollment system will not allow you to enroll for a course for which you do not have the prerequisite(s) or if the prerequisite does not appear on your academic record.

A long distance calling package is recommended, as teleconference long distance fees are the responsibility of the student. If your course teleconference is scheduled within prime time and the packages do not apply, please inquire about DLCE's special primetime package. (North America Only)

Answer: Students taking e-Learning classes are more likely to be successful if they possess the following technology skills before starting their e-Learning classes: Know how to connect to the Internet and use web browser software to locate information on the Internet. Know how to create and manage folders on a computer, including finding, uploading, downloading, and saving individual files. Know how to manage security settings on your computer through the Internet browser software and firewall.

GW students register for distance learning courses using the GWeb Information System. The Course Reference Numbers (CRNs) for the classes are found online.

Each student or prospective student should take the Orientation for Online Students. At the end of the Orientation is a Quiz. After submitting your quiz you will get a response via email from the Office of Distance Learning. Keep this email (your instructor may require it as proof that you are ready to take the class).

For participating in on-line learning, you will need a fairly modern computer (a pentium 2 or better is preferred) with a cd-rom drive, a dependable connection to the internet (preferably faster than a dial up connection- you can use dial up connections, but you will be happier with dsl or cable access especially when downloading large files), a word processing program, an email account. Some courses may have more specific software requirements.
