Yes. We have a program to introduce children and their families to the Surgery Center. These preoperative visits are extremely useful in preparing a child for the stresses of the "big day." We strongly encourage you to utilize this service. Please see the Preoperative Tour section.

ambulatory surgery center (ASC) provides outpatient surgery to patients. ASCs are freestanding or based within a hospital. The plan for these patients is to admit and discharge them on the same day. However, some ASC patients who experience complications may require admission to a hospital. Because complications may arise from any surgical procedure, you should consider the ASC's affiliation with a hospital.

Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASC) are facilities where surgeries that do not require a hospital admission are performed. They provide a cost-effective and convenient environment that is less stressful than the large hospital environment.

Ambulatory surgery refers to any procedure or surgery where an overnight stay afterwards is not required. This allows a patient to return quickly to home and complete their recovery in comfortable and familiar surroundings. It has been proven to be a safe and cost-effective method which has a high satisfaction rate among patients.

Your physician or surgeon will schedule your procedure at the Emory Clinic Ambulatory Surgery Center.

Report to the Surgical Day Care Unit on the third floor of the Wang Ambulatory Care Building at Massachusetts General Hospital.

This is about a scheduled or emergency surgical operation where the patient will remain less than 12 hours in the Health Centre which has admitted him/her, before returning home. This surgery is most often performed under local regional anaesthesia by an ananesthetist-reanimator. This surgery is most times performed under the same safety protection conditions as any other surgical operation which requires extended hospitalisation and/or general anaesthesia.

Some surgeries require more time than others. This cannot always be predicted prior to scheduling. Every effort will be made to carry out your procedure in a timely fashion. We recommend that you bring a book, magazine or headset (iPod) with you. Warm socks and a sweater are helpful, during the winter months-Nov-April, because our center tends to be chilly (this helps to minimize infection risk). Juice, crackers, water, tea, and coffee are provided in case you get hungry.

For a person who is in overall good health, the risks of ambulatory surgery are very low. Of course, all types of surgery include some degree of risk, but major incidents, such as a heart attack or neurological injury are extremely rare. There is also a small risk that a patient may have a reaction to an anesthetic medication, but this is usually prevented by a thorough understanding of the patient's medical history during pre-operative consultation.

Obviously, there will be a surgeon's fee for your procedure. If you are having anesthesia, an anesthesia fee from the relevant provider will also apply. In terms of a surgery center facility fee, "A facility fee may be charged to you and your insurance carrier if your case requires a complex repair, flap, or skin graft to close the wound". Please check with your insurance carrier or our billing department for information on coverage, deductibles and co-pay information.

The day care was moved to Trailside, as planned, about the middle of February, 2006. Day Care will move back to the High School in the summer of 2008, with a slight chance of moving earlier in 2008.

The assessment nurse will tell you the exact time of your operation and when to come to the hospital.  In general, you are expected to be in the hospital, an hour and a half prior to your scheduled procedure.

If you have been assigned a room and have been admitted to a hospital bed, then you will be transported to the pre-operative holding area about 30 minutes prior to your operation.  Your family may remain in your room or wait in the Surgery waiting area on the second floor.  It would be helpful if family members or friends notify the nurses’ desk or the waiting room receptionist of their whereabouts, so that we can find them to let them know that your surgery is over.

No. You can have nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery. You may take your medications with a sip of water.

All patients will need an up-to-date medical history and physical form. Some may need blood tests, EKG or x-rays. These services will be available preoperatively at the Surgery Center. Your surgeon will advise where you will have this done. Some families may elect to bring their children for a preoperative tour of the Ambulatory Surgery Center. Some patients may choose to come to the Center before their surgery date to complete paperwork or make payments.

All our services are confidential; to the full extent allowable by law. Which means we won't tell anyone (parents, friends, etc.) that you visited us and won't contact you without your permission. We are here to help you!

First, a receptionist will greet you and give you a medical questionnaire and other forms to fill out. Next, comes a thorough evaluation by the Chiropractor, including a review of possible perpetuating factors. We do not promote unnecessary X-rays. Most often, your existing X-rays are enough; many patients do not need any. If they are needed, you will be referred out for this procedure. Then, a Myotherapist will treat you for almost an hour.

The OR Center holds an Open House for those students who have been offered admission. The Open House is held in early April. At that time, students are invited to come visit and meet with faculty and students.
