If the composer died during or before 1935 then his or her work is no longer in copyright. If this is the case, you can certainly ask. How do you decide which finish to put on a particular piece?

Nordy Finishing Q&A
Nordy: The type of project really dictates what type of finish you put on it. If you're building cabinets or a bookcase, an oil-type finish is very simple and pleasing, and very easy to repair. I woudn't recommend an oil finish for a dining room table, because you need more protection. You need something harder, more durable, and waterproof. It all depends on what you're building. It also has to do with personal preference.

What determines whether and when a particular Lladró piece will be retired?

A RETIRED COLLECTION, LLC - Frequently Asked Questions
ALL Lladró will eventually retire. Nobody knows WHEN. If we did, it would be like buying only sure winners in the stock market. Retired figurines generally go up significantly in value. We believe that fragile pieces that are found to be more difficult to ship wind up getting retired sooner than others. Also, of course, Limited Editions often sell out sooner (but not always). Each Fall, Lladró may retire as few as a dozen or as many as 200 pieces a year.

Students often discover that "least-favorite" pieces later become "most-favorite" pieces after some quality practice. Ask the teacher if there is something the child does not understand about the piece.
