All of my PCB and Schematic files are in Protel (mostly DOS) format. Protel format is the defacto industry standard here in Australia. There is a Freeware version of the Protel DOS PCB program available called EasyTrax, and Protel have demo versions of their Windows products that will read the files. Whenever text is stored in a file, or sent across a network, it is always encoded in some way or other, to convert the characters into bytes. Believe me: if I knew, I'd tell you. You can circumvent this problem by explicitly setting the PixelFormat property of your TBitmap object to anything but pf32bit. The default value is pfDevice, which makes the bitmap's bit depth correspond to that of your display. This means that people running in 32 bit color will generate invalid BMPs, whereas people running in 24 or 16 bit will not. To be on the safe side, always set the bitmap to 24 bit in your code.

It can't read and write the special file formats of those programs, but with the general purpose file format GPX this is possible - for Googel Earth with KML as well.. Why not use the GPX file format in general, to save user data, instead of the special file formats of Gartrip?
