There is a skin like covering over the bones called the periosteum. This covering contains nerve endings. In a healthy joint, there is a gelatin like structure, called cartilage, which cushions the area where two bones meet to form the joint. The cartilage actually prevents the two bones from coming in direct contact with each other and irritating the nerve endings. Over time, the cartilage begins to wear away.
