Though MiniVend has ODBC capability, the Microsoft Access ODBC driver is not a network driver. You cannot access it on a PC from your ISP or UNIX system. However, you can turn it around. Once you have created a MySQL or other SQL database on the UNIX machine, you may then obtain the Windows ODBC driver for the database (mySQL has a package called myODBC) and use the UNIX database as a data source for your PC-based database program. You install it by typing, as root, rpm -i mysql-3.XX.XX.rpm.

For MS Access databases, you should have a directory called 'db' at the SAME level as your 'wwwroot' directory. If you delete your /db directory and need to create one, this must be done with an FTP client such as WS-FTP or CuteFTP and not Microsoft FrontPage. The /db directory should not be inside the 'wwwroot' directory. This will ensure that no-one that visits your site will be able to directly download your database. Upload your database to this 'db' directory.

Currently we do not run Microsoft Windows NT/2000 Servers so ASP and Access Database are not available. Our servers, like the majority of web servers, are UNIX based for maximum reliability and there is no native support for ASP or Access. ColdFusion has to be configured to login as a user with rights to the access table on the other server. By default, ColdFusion logs in as the System account which does not have rights to other server resources.

Most desktop databases currently require a JDBC solution that uses ODBC underneath. This is because the vendors of these database products haven't implemented all-Java JDBC drivers. We provide the data in dBase IV, which is a basic database format that is easily imported into most spreadsheet or database manager programs — including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access or FoxPro. We can provide specific directions for importing these files.
