Pharmacare will have a set of criteria for a therapy/drug that must be met in order to gain coverage under Special Authority. Pharmacare has a list of Special Authority programs on their web site and the latest information on Special Authority medications and criteria for approval can be accessed through PharmaNet HelpDesk at 1-800-554-0250.

The Policy Approval Authority is responsible for the management and operation of the overall PKI and establishment of the Certificate Policy and a Certification Practice Statement. Approval authority is immediately revoked when an employee is no longer in an active status in the Xerox HR system. Once an employee is reactivated in HR, authority will be assigned based on the generic levels. As soon as your status changes to inactive, approval authority is revoked. When you return to an active status, approval will be automatically reassigned unless your approval authority was granted as an approved exception.

Some drugs are expensive. A Special Authority grants partial to full coverage if the eligibility criteria for that drug has been met. The cost to the individual is based on Fair Pharmacare. The processing and manufacture of certain foods is covered by specific legislation. These can be premises dealing with fish, meat products, milk products, etc. Premises must apply to the council for approval to trade. Before approval is granted, premises will be checked to ensure compliance with the specific criteria listed in the legislation. Approval authority exceptions are valid for a maximum of 12 months. After 12 months the system will automatically revoke the exception (and return approval to the standard default values) unless an approved exception form has been received to extend the exception an additional 12 months.
