It is expected that most instructors will change their own grades. Instructors will have the option to assign a “Change Grades” proxy for a class section via Teaching Support. The proxy is a local HTTP (web) server internal to a regional/main data center, which caches (stores) frequently requested content. It was originally implemented in order to greatly reduce unnecessary network traffic, particularly backbone traffic leading to the @Home Network in the US. When you want to access a website via your proxy, you send a request to your proxy, which then checks to see if any of the related content is stored locally.

Normally when you request a page your request goes directly to the site serving the page, even if this is overseas. Multiple requests for the same page increase network traffic and slow things down. If you configure your browser to use a proxy, your request goes to the proxy. If the page is stored in the proxy's disk space (cache) then it can be sent right back to you - without needing to go overseas.

SOCKS seems to be obsolete and only a few people have asked about it. However, you can still use KDX with a SOCKS proxy if you find and download one of those SOCKS programs that enable the use of SOCKS in a program (such as KDX) that does not normally support SOCKS. For MS Windows, we suggest SocksCap. For MacOS, you could try ProxyBouncer. Please note that we have never tried these programs and we do not know how well they work.
