We recommend that the first stop for family members be to contact the Family Support Center, chaplain, or LSSC for assistance with locating survivor support groups in the community. The list below includes a number of private, as well as government, resources. Listing of the private sites is not intended as an official endorsement of those programs. Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) TAPS is a national network of peer support for military survivors.

Support groups should be just that: "support" -- not treatment. A reputable group will provide only scientific information, but beware of groups holding "sales meetings" for the latest recommended treatment.

Local CCFC volunteer Chapters hold education meetings and other events. In a few cases, they have been authorized to offer support group services led by trained facilitators. We recommend that you consult with your physician and local hospital on the availability of various services.

The Foundation sponsors volunteer support groups all over the world as well as telephone support contacts. These groups offer people with alopecia areata a chance to share feelings, experiences, and solutions to coping with the disease. The National Rosacea Society is the world's largest support organization for rosacea, offering information and educational services to hundreds of thousands of rosacea patients and health professionals each year. While face-to-face support groups are not well established, rosacea sufferers can find online chat groups and forums through www.yahoogroups.com and www.rosacea-support.org. Facial burning, stinging and itching are commonly reported by many rosacea patients.

Survivor - Anyone battling cancer. A survivor might be the person diagnosed, a spouse, a child, a parent, a friend or any caregiver.

Those involved in support groups should receive training in breastfeeding and young child feeding as well as training in counseling skills and the dynamics of support groups. Training for the facilitator may take the form of an official, recognized training course or an apprenticeship. Training programs vary from 20 to 80 hours. Lessons spread over time allow for better assimilation of material as do participatory activities.

The community may not perceive the need for establishing a support group. The prevailing attitude in society may be an obstacle. People may think that breastfeeding is a common practice, old fashioned, difficult, embarrassing, or inconvenient. Countering these attitudes is difficult. News releases in print and on radio, posters, and leaflets can help raise awareness of breastfeeding in general and the benefits of support groups.

Yes, Full Circle has a birthparent buddy program by which you can be in touch with other birthparents by phone, e-mail, regular mail or in person. We know it can be helpful to talk with someone who either has been through adoption or who is currently going through the adoption process. We also have a monthly meeting time scheduled at The Birthparent Center for those birthparents who would like to be a part of a local discussion and support group.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) has some exciting programs to provide people affected by osteoporosis with the support they need to successfully cope with the disease.

This group supports survivors of sexual assault. We meet 11-12 times a semester at a scheduled time. Members of the group decide what to discuss and how the group will run. A support group is formed every semester and a survivor can join at any time. All information shared is bound by the same confidential guidelines as the Office of Sexual Assault Prevention. We are ambivalent about eating disorders support groups. For someone who has recently begun to starve or stuff, especially someone young in years, we recommend formal treatment to quickly break disordered eating patterns and restore physical and psychological health. If people find friends and acceptance in a support group, they may begin to define their identity as "eating disordered" so they can continue to belong and participate. That makes recovery much harder.

Many treatment facilities have a network of support groups in their area and we highly recommend that you participate in them. Ask your doctor. We suggest that you contact any bariatric treatment center to get more information about diet plans, weight loss products and supplements required a after specific bariatric surgical procedure. If you have forgotten who your doctor was just choose another practicing near you, they would be happy to help you.

The facilitator of a family support group would love the conversations that are triggered by four select readings. The readings are designed to raise the level of understanding on the possibilities that still reside for the family member.
