For those whose proficiency of the German Language does not allow to study in German, there is a wide variety of International Degree Courses, where the language of instruction is English, at least in the first semesters. German language courses are offered before and during the program. Many postgraduate courses are designed and conducted entirely in English.

Students with a working knowledge of German are best able to make use of their time as study abroad students. For that reason, Northwestern has affiliated with programs that require either one or two years of college level German. Students in the School of Music may study in Austria with the IES Vienna program even if they have not yet taken German. While in Vienna, all students enroll in an intensive German language course. This depends upon the program you choose. If you want to apply to an NYU exchange program in Berlin or Vienna, you must have successfully completed Intermediate German II or the equivalent by the time you begin the exchange. We recommend that you also, if possible, take at least one post-intermediate course, such as Conversation & Composition or Germany: 1989 & Beyond, to prepare yourself adequately for these exchange programs.

You will be assigned a certain level after your German placement test. You can do the test together with the German course registration either at our school, by mail, fax, or online. You will receive a confirmation of the German course and the level in the confirmation after your on-account payment.

No. All classes are taught in English. German language classes, however, are a mandatory part of all of our programs for international students who are not fluent in German. You will have six hours of German per week during the first year of your program. Undergraduate students will have another 2 hours per week during the second year. Please note that a mandatory part of all programs is a trimester internship in Germany.

Beyond Borders is an exchange program. Meaning students from Germany come to the FSU and students from FSU travel to Germany. This is what makes the program unique. In February and March, ten German students and one staff member travel to FSU for three weeks. During this time, you will be involved with the planning of their activities, spending time with them, participating in dialogues and just hanging out.

Proficiency in German is a requirement for all programs of study at the BTU Cottbus where the language of instruction is German. Proof of this proficiency is achieved by successfully completing an examination known as the DSH or German language exam for the university admission of foreign students. We look at the level of German, not the actual number of courses. The equivalent of two years of college level German with a "B" average is required. This can be met by completing a two year sequence (e.g. German 101-202), or by taking advanced coursework that already indicates you are beyond the two year level (e.g. a 3rd year composition course and/or literature course taught in German).
