The expanded Computer Catalog Center adjacent to the Main Reading Room enables patrons to use a simplified automated bibliographic search program to look up titles in the Library's general book collections. Users outside the Library can gain free access to its online catalog. Major exhibitions of the library are also available on-line, as are selected prints and photographs, historic films and political speeches. Information about the U.S. Congress can be found on-line at THOMAS.

On May 15, 1998, following a competitive procurement process, the Library of Congress awarded a contract to Endeavor Information Systems of Des Plaines, IL, for its Voyager integrated library system (ILS) software (for further information, see the press release). The Library began using the Voyager software for its ILS on August 16, 1999 for its cataloging operations and has added additional modules since.

A help line is available for EXTRACT users at 301-457-4151. There are a few things you can do if you think you have encountered a program bug. See if you can reproduce the problem. You may need to be able to tell the person at the other end of the line the sequence of steps that brought you to the problem. If the program terminated abruptly, i.e., "bombed", then EXTRACT left a 1- line message at the top of the screen that may be the key to determining the problem.

The use of barcodes will lead to reduced staff workload, increased accuracy, improved circulation capabilities, faster check-in and check-out, easier sorting and inventory management. Barcodes are associated with item records in your Library Management Software and can hold critical information such as item number, call number, copy and volume numbers as well as associated codes used in your library.

Your instructor may require that you attend a library instruction class as a part of your course. These classes are extremely helpful for research projects. Be sure to attend. If your instructor doesn't schedule a class, consider signing up for a free S.O.S. (Smart Online Searcher) Research & Internet Workshop, given throughout the quarter at different times of the day.

You may reserve items from your computer via the online catalog. Once you have located the item you want, follow the directions on the screen to reserve the item.The online catalog requires a patron barcode to reserve items. Be sure to choose the appropriate pick-up location so we will know where to send the item.

We have installed the Pharos sign-up system to make better use of our computer resources and provide effective and fair access to all patrons.

The online catalog provides a number of additional features including advanced searching, saved items, saved searches, the ability to print or e-mail lists of books, to see what you have checked out, and to renew books yourself. The library is able to open the public computers, so customers can load software, use the CD-ROM drives, etc. When the computer is restarted, all of the changes made are erased and the computer returns to its original state. When I attempt to log on I receive the message, "The system cannot log you on to this domain ... the password for that account is incorrect."

The NCSU Libraries licenses SirsiDynix's Unicorn system and the Web2 online catalog for authority searching.
