The citywide Showcase of Schools takes place on Saturday, October 21, 2006, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Bayside Expo Center in Dorchester. Every school in the district is represented at the Showcase, with principals, staff and parents present to describe what each school has to offer. The best way to learn more about school for your child is to visit schools. This year, School Preview Time runs from November 6, 2006, to January 19, 2007.

Most schools have a no-nit policy to control head lice outbreaks. Generally, when you have completed one pediculicidal treatment & one olive oil treatment (or two olive oil treatments) and a thorough nit combing and manually removed all nits, you can send your child back to school. Orientation Evening / Curriculum Night is held as part of the first Family Meeting. Parents meet with teachers in the classroom to discuss the year's curriculum. Students do not need to be kept out of school. The student with TB is being treated and will return to school when no longer able to spread TB. Students who have had TB in the past or latent TB do not need to be kept home as they cannot spread TB. Only students with active TB in the lungs need to be kept home until treatment has been started and are no longer able to spread TB.

A range of educational options are available for children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Children in the 4th & 5th grades may bring their bicycles to school only if the following conditions are met: Bicyclists should also be instructed NOT to ride through the parking lot or on the playground. If the regulations are not observed, bicycle privileges will be suspended.

In the absence of fever, use your discretion. If a child is frequently coughing and sneezing, he/she may feel more comfortable at home. Please reinforce good hand washing habits. No, children with fever should stay at home. Giving a medication may reduce the fever for a few hours, but the child is still sick and likely contagious, exposing staff and classmates to illness. The medication will wear off, the fever will return, and the nurse will be calling the parent to pick up the sick child.

Your dietitian will help you plan meals that can go to school with your child. Tuna, egg, or chicken salads are easy to carry in small plastic containers. Warm or chilled food can be carried in a small cooler or insulated bag, or wrapped in foil. There are many celebrations at school that involve food. It's very important for all the teachers and aides to know that your child cannot have the same treats that the other children get.

When your child complains of being sick, and has symptoms like sore throat, head cold, diarrhea, vomiting, or has had a fever greater than 100.4°F, in the last 24 hours, your child should remain at home. Keeping your child home when he or she is sick will permit your child time to recover and reduce the spread of illness to others. Please call and inform the school when your child is absent due to illness.

All children with ASD have a right to a free appropriate public education that is designed to meet their unique needs. Children with ASD are enrolled in public schools, private schools, and are also home schooled. The setting will be determined by the child's education team, including parents.

According to the Health (Infectious Diseases) Regulations 2001, children with head lice may be readmitted to school after head lice treatment has commenced. A certificate from a doctor or council is not required before your child goes back to school. Children do not catch head lice from school, they catch it from other children when they gather together at schools. Head lice are not the fault of schools.
