A transom is a glass area that runs above a door, kind of like a sidelight up high. Depending on the unit height, it will either be attached to the prehung unit or it will be separate.

Yes, first build the kit and then fit a 3/4" plywood transom. Cut off the end of the boat flush with the transom. Caution should be exercised when using a motor. An electric trolling motor is more than adequate to propel a craft of this size.

Typically four bolts are used to mount an outboard motor to a transom. Generally, with a new engine, the manufacturer supplies the mounting hardware. The hardware is usually stainless steel machine screws of 1/2-inch diameter and threaded with the standard 1/2-13NC thread pitch. It is also seen that machine screws with finer pitch, 1/2-20NF, are used. On some engines the mounting screws may be metric fasteners of similar strength and size.

It is believed that the hole arrangement currently in use by most engine manufacturers follows these dimensions: The top pair of holes are spaced 12 and 7/8-inch on center; each hole is 6 and 7/16-inch from the engine bracket centerline. The bottom pair of holes are spaced 9 and 7/8-inch on center; each hole is 4 and 15/16-inch from the engine bracket centerline. The centerline of the top holes is 2-inches below the top of the engine bracket.

I do NOT recommend you add a transom to the canoe, but rather make a side bracket, which we have seen used on canoe sterned canoes in the Pacific.

While the dinghy may rub slightly, this will only occur when the dinghy is down close to the water. By gently fending off, this generally does not cause a problem.
