Organic waste can be recycled for our benefit, placing it in the landfill only fills up our landfills. We know how costly and complicated it is to site landfills. Organic waste placed in landfills produces methane gas, which contributes to global warming unless it is collected and utilized.

Nonmethane organic compounds are contained in discarded items such as household cleaning products, materials coated with or containing paints and adhesives, and other items. During the waste decomposition process, NMOC can be stripped from the waste by methane, carbon dioxide, and other gases and carried in landfill gas.

When you pull into the main gates of the landfill you will go up a small hill. You will see a sign directing you towards the right side of the scale house. Staying to the right, you will approach a Stop sign and a traffic light. When the light is green, proceed onto the scales. Once on the scales, park your vehicle and walk to the scale attendant window.

Concentrations of NMOC in uncontrolled landfill gas can vary depending on several factors, including the type of waste discarded in the landfill, the climate surrounding the landfill, and the physical properties of the individual organic compound. A default concentration of 595 parts per million by volume (ppmv) of NMOC is presented in EPA’s Compilation of Air Pollutant Emission Factors (AP-42).

Landfill gas energy projects involve collecting and combusting landfill gas. The process of combustion destroys organic compounds, including methane and NMOC. During combustion, these organic compounds chemically react with oxygen in the presence of heat, breaking apart to form water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other less volatile compounds.

Waste Containers: Animal by-product waste must be stored in a clean, lidded leak proof container and must be labelled ‘Category 3 material’ and ‘Not intended for Human Consumption’. Storage should not pose a risk of contamination to other foodstuffs, nor be left exposed to animals or wild birds. Collection must be by a Licensed Carrier (see below for how to find one) and be taken to an approved premise for the correct method of disposal.

The site never accepted any unexploded ordnance from the Former Lowry Bombing and Gunnery Range, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal or any other military facilities. The only wastes accepted from the former nuclear weapons facility at Rocky Flats were non-radioactive solvents and construction debris.

Besides using a compost bin or compost tumbler, you can also use worm bins (known as vermicomposting), compost tea, or compost units designed to manufacture humus from human and pet feces for your waste management needs.

Hazardous Waste is collected at Room 2104, Molecular Sciences, Monday - Friday from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Hazardous Waste must be collected and stored in the same or adjacent room to where it is generated before it is transported to the Chemistry Hazardous Waste facility. At the present time, Molecular Sciences, Room 2104 is the first area of the Chemistry Hazardous Waste Facility.

Basically all kinds of fruit and vegetable left-overs. Fish or meat only in small quantities and wrapped in absorbent paper. Plants and flowers, or garden waste such as grass and hedge clippings.

Organics are materials that break down naturally and can be turned into compost. Compost is good for our soil because it provides important food for plants, it provides food and a home for beneficial soil microorganisms and soil animals, and it helps hold our soil together. Healthy soil leads to healthy plants which is good for all of us.

A large proportion of garden waste and food scraps collected by local authorities in the UK end up being disposed of in landfill. If you compost you could be helping to reduce the amount of waste buried. Allowing it to break down in a composter is more beneficial to the environment. Landfill can produce far more greenhouse gas when breaking down organic matter than a home composter and you also end up with a usable material to put back in your garden.

Organic Valley lactose free milk can be used in all the same ways other milk is used. Drink a glass of rich, creamy lactose free milk as a satisfying snack, with a meal, or have it with a bowl of cereal. Lactose free milk can also be used in lactose free sauces, salad dressings, and desserts.

The federal government deeded the site to the City and County of Denver in 1964 for use as a landfill. Denver operated the Lowry Landfill on the site from 1965 to1980. Waste Management took over operations of the Lowry Landfill in 1980 under contract to Denver. Under a settlement among the hundreds of entities that at one time used Lowry Landfill as an industrial disposal site, Denver and Waste Management together agreed to manage implementation of the selected remedy.

There is no single, definitive list of special wastes. That said, the Landfill Directive will not increase the scope of the special waste regime. The Landfill Directive seeks to reduce the volume of waste that is landfilled by, for example, prohibiting certain waste types from landfills and requiring wastes to be pre-treated before landfilling. Organic waste or biodegradable waste / wet garbage means waste of plant and animal origin. It includes kitchen waste including: tea leaves, egg shells, fruit and vegetable peels, cooked food scraps, meat and bones, garden waste including leaves and grass, carton waste, cardboard waste and paper waste. These types of wastes are 100% recyclable and comprise around 67% of the solid waste in a residential complex or hotel.

Care must be taken to avoid moisture in the organic bin, especially in the summer months. Left-over food, particularly if it contains meat, attracts flies, which means maggots. Organic waste should therefore be wrapped in absorbent newspaper, which will soak up the moisture. Gardeners can add a handful of chalk to keep the maggots away.

Contamination through pathogens like cryptosporidium, E. Coli, Salmonella, and giardia is other potential source of contamination of our surface and ground waters.

The green waste from the county landfill comes from hundreds of different souces, many of them commercial landscapers. Green waste may be used on an organic farm provided it is first comosted according to the requirements of the NOP foudn in section 205.203(c)(2) or brought onto the farm and quarantined for three years to date of harvest.

Landfill gas is generated during the natural process of bacterial decomposition of organic material contained in MSW landfills. A number of factors influence the quantity of gas that a MSW landfill generates and the components of that gas. These factors include, but are not limited to, the types and age of the waste buried in the landfill, the quantity and types of organic compounds in the waste, and the moisture content and temperature of the waste.

By volume, landfill gas is about 50 percent methane and 50 percent carbon dioxide and water vapor. It also contains small amounts of nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen, less than 1 percent NMOC, and trace amounts of inorganic compounds. Some of these compounds have strong, pungent odors (for example, hydrogen sulfide, or H2S). Nonmethane organic compounds consist of certain HAP and VOC, which can react with sunlight to form ground-level ozone (smog) if uncontrolled.

Recycling offers a host of environmental, economic, and societal benefits (see Question "Is Recycling Worthwhile?"). While landfill space is plentiful on the national level, some areas of the United States, particularly the heavily populated East Coast, have less landfill capacity and higher landfill costs. Communities can make money and avoid high disposal costs by selling certain recyclable materials.

We don't have one in Story County. Garbage goes to the Resource Recovery Plant, where it is processed into ferrous metal, refuse derived fuel (RDF), and rejects. Through an agreement with the Boone County Landfill, we take our rejected material to them. Therefore, it is not necessary for us to maintain our own separate landfill.
