It has been noticed that several cardiac arrests occur during summer time. But it is not sure if it this may be an excess in statistical terms. It is however hard to define if these cardiac arrests are related to a specific "risk" due to heat or sweating or if it is mainly a reflection of increased physical activity, excitement and playing during the summer.

The dog's estrus cycle is divided up into several stages. The first stage, pro estrus, usually lasts about 9 days. During this time the female's vulva swells and a discharge may be noted, although the female will not be receptive to the male. The actual estrus stage, or 'standing heat', lasts 3-21 days with an average of 9 days and occurs at the end of pro estrus. During this time the female is receptive to the male and will continue to have vulvar swelling and discharge.

This can vary from one dog to the next. Typically, the heat cycle lasts around two to three weeks. The female's vulva will swell and then bleed for several days. Mating is typically done after being in heat for a good 10 days. Some females have what is called a silent heat. This occurs when a dog does not show the typical signs of being in heat but can still get pregnant. Be careful if your dog is in heat and you do not wish her to be bred.

Because a full-term pregnancy is only eight to nine weeks, a healthy female is capable of producing several litters of kittens in a year.

Dogs reach puberty around six months of age. Your female puppy's first heat cycle will last 21 to 22 days, and she will continue to go into heat on the average of every six months, usually in the late winter and summer.

Because the system will act as a giant storage heater initially it may take several hours to heat up.

Insulated floors heat faster than un-insulated floors. The type of floor finish can make a difference too. If your floor is un-insulated, using Dukkaboard will reduce floor heat-up times and the system will cost less to run.
