Harness straps should be snug with no slack, but not so tight as to be uncomfortable. The top straps should be on the shoulders, and some prefer to say that you should not be able to "pinch an inch" or get more than a finger in between the shoulder and the strap. The lower straps in a 5-point harness should be fairly tight across the thighs (not on the tummy). A tight harness can prevent ejection, and also can increase the ride-down time to reduce the chance of crash injury.

The closer your load is to your center of gravity the more comfortable it will be to carry. When packs are not completely full (like near the end of a trip after you have eaten most of the food) they tend to sag backward. The compression straps pull the load into your back and make great places to lash more gear onto the pack. Keep in mind, though, that anything lashed to the outside will be far from the center of gravity, so light items like foam pads work best here.

The crossover straps will not twist if you make sure, at the start of your ride, that your reins are not twisted. You might find it helpful to place some marker on the reins in your hand to remind you which alignment is the correct one. If the reins are twisted at the level of your hands, the twist runs forward into the crossover strap area. All of the materials will do this but it is more likely to happen if you are using a swivel connection between the reins and the crossover strap.

Lifting straps are worn around the wrist and wrapped tightly around the bar. They are usually made out of a heavy cloth and have an open loop at one end, so a loop may be made and your hand placed through it. This allow you to lift more weight than your grip can handle. Usually done while working the back, such as deadlifts, various rows, pull-[ups/downs], and sometimes curls. Treat these similar to lifting belts. Use them as a lifting aid for your heavy sets.

The most likely suspects are sun-tan lotion which, among other ingredients, contain a red or yellow color additive. Left untreated, the sun evaporates the liquid from these lotions, and "burns" the color into the strap. The same effect may come from common rain water, which contains a small amount of dirt.
