My posts are on-topic and tagged correctly, so why is everyone annoyed with me?

What should I do to someone who posts something off-topic?
Netiquette when posting to comp.lang.c++, C++ FAQ Liteextended flame war against an off-topic posting is just as off-topic as the original off-topic posting. The cure can be worse than the disease. Instead use something brief and professional such as in the previous two FAQs (which, by the way, were adapted from other sources; see the credits in those FAQs). And please don't get personal or nasty — that just prolongs the (off-topic) exchange. What about spam? [Recently fixed a typo thanks to Paul Savage (in 6/02).

However, if you are upset that someone "hijacked" your thread or has derailed another, do what is good and just! Bring the thread back to life and back on topic! The only thing worse than an off-topic post is the complaint about it being off-topic! There are some obvious exceptions to this rule, however.

Frequently Asked QuestionsNo, of course not. If the post is on-topic, then you must abide by the rules in your reply. You can request clarification of course. Abusive posts, regardless of supposed justification, will be deleted. DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS. Sometime posts are made by interlopers to get rise. I will take care of those when I see them. It's best to ruin their fun by letting it disappear quietly. Probably, although some people have excessively thin skins. If you don't think I have addressed it, appeal.
